Hallorann was great. I liked him right away in the movie and in the book. He didn't talk down to little Danny, and was warm toward him. He managed to explain the Overlook's particular psychic 'residues' left behind from bad events without frightening Danny badly, which would have been pointless since the caretaker position was the only thing keeping the Torrance family off public assistance and so they had to stay there all winter. He knew the Overlook could be frightening for people who have the 'shining', but that staying away from certain places and regarding any 'bad' sights as merely 'pictures in a book' could help. Danny trusted him, which affected later outcomes considerably.

To me tho I think Dick underestimated the Hotel. Very clearly it was sentient and meant harm to those who shined like a hungry animal. Maybe it never went for him because he was never alone as much as the Torrences, but it clearly never encountered someone with as strong of a shine as Danny and wanted him badly. Danny was even able to invade Halloranns mind regarding room 237, someone who has honed his shine for decades. I think Jack had it as well, and it probably dulled when he was an alcoholic. Him being forced to be sober by being so far away from alcohol is probably what allowed the hotel to influence him so much. Had Dick sensed his father had it too, he may have saved them the trouble, but as Grady said, Jack was "always the caretaker" so I assume the Hotel ate the soul of some past version of Jack and has been spitting him into new lifetimes in attempts to find someone as strong with The Shining as Danny.

This scene is a good example of the strange dream-logic of the Overlook hotel. 2:00 The handle is on the right side of the door, so they should be walking in from the left side of the screen when it cuts to the inside of the freezer. 2:04 They come in from the right, and the handle has switched sides. 2:33 They exit a different room than the one they supposedly entered. 2:45 On the right side of the screen you can see the door Dick originally went to open, and on the left is a mystery door that should lead into the pantry, but would be blocked by shelves inside. I've heard there are other scenes that do similar things, but this is the only one I remember.

But before long we discover that Halloran is actually the good guy, and he will be the man who will risk a lot to try to save people whom he'd only met briefly. Really cool character. 2:02 Please take a good look at this scene. The door handle is on the right side facing Hallorann and Wendy. However, when the camera moves inside the door, the position of the door handle is on the left. 4:02 In this scene, the three exit the food storage, but in this scene the door handle is back on the right side of the door, but it turns out that it is a different door than when they entered from the surrounding floor plan. However, when I entered the room, it moved to the left. There are so many little tricks like this in The Shining. That's because the Overlook Hotel isn't a real building, it's a ghost. Also, when Danny is playing on the carpet, the pattern suddenly changes to something completely different, and people appear from corridors that shouldn't exist. In the first place, the room where Jack is typing on the typewriter is absolutely impossible in terms of floor plan. That spacious atrium room and the guest room on the second floor are absolutely incompatible.

My kitchen at work is almost the same size/layout as this one and some of the equipment looks the same (especially the mixer, lol). When I got the initial tour, it was snowing heavily outside and I kept getting the eeriest vibes and didn't know why. When I finally made the connection, my boss obligingly posed with a fire ax and said, "Here's Johnny!" 10/10 would highly recommend working in the Overlook kitchen.

It's very clever because he says "this is our walk in freezer" and you assume the next shot is them entering that same freezer, but we've directly jumped ahead and in a different freezer Halloran is now saying "...this is where we keep our meats..." Kubrick was always doing this. The Overlook fucks with your head.
