Listening to the podcast bought back the fear of putting this, cassette in the VHS player and the dread of those opening credits. Absolutely fantastic episode guys. I have been working through the podcasts and this one compelled me to come over to KZitem to see you working your magic. Your amazing analysis, extensive research of fan theories and behind the scenes knowledge has painted this film in even more detail than I remember and I can’t wait to watch it again (as with all of your episodes). Thank you for all your hard work and please keep those awesome movie choices coming.

My favorite is the doors across from 237. If we follow Danny in the layout of that scene, we see that Danny is 2nd floor above the Lounge. Danny makes a loop and passes the view of the Lounge on the right and continue into the hallway, the doors on the right should not exist. Because we're 2nd floor next to the Lounge!

Why didn’t yall mention the very last scene in which we see the picture of jack in the ballroom ? Woulda been interested to hear yall divulge on that & the theories around its meaning.

The scene near the end, when Wendy sees the hotel lobby full of skeletons and cobwebs, is a direct reference to the end scene of the 1972 Peter O'Toole film "THE RULING CLASS," which seems like a zany comedy in the first half or so, then becomes a tragic horror film towards the end. It's available for free on KZitem, so everybody who loves Kubrick's "THE SHiNiNG" ought to see it. By echoing that earlier film, Kubrick seems to be making a not-so-veiled criticism of the ruling class itself, which that O'Toole film was doing. In an interview on the Dick Cavett Show, Peter O'Toole referred to "THE RULING CLASS" as a comedy with tragic relief. SPOILERS AHEAD!!! The character he played in that film (named Jack Gurney) was the heir to the earldom of Gurney, but he's a loon who thinks he's Jesus Christ/God, and his uncle wants to secure the estate for his own side of the family and eventually have Jack committed in an asylum. But his shrink finds a way to 'cure' him of his God-delusion, making him 'sane' enough to take his place in the House of Lords. Tragically, though, he may be shocked out of believing that he's Jesus Christ, but it turns out his delusion has swung to the other extreme . . . so that Jack becomes Jack the Ripper. It's in that final scene, where he is invested into the House of Lords, that he starts hallucinating that the entire assembly of noblemen in that chamber are all skeletons draped by cobwebs. Then he uses a knife to murder his wife, and . . . THE END. There's no way Kubrick didn't see that film prior to making "THE SHiNiNG" as that scene where Wendy sees all the skeletons and cobwebs in the hotel lobby is such a blatant visual 'echo' of that finale from "THE RULING CLASS."

The Stanley Hotel (which Stephen King originally based the Overlook on in the book) does let people stay in Room 217 for an up-charge. I think it’s around $500/night so they are cashing that in

Love this movie so damn much, probably because I never read the book. Everyone I've talked to who has read the book hates this movie.. so I guess I won't read the book.

I’m listening to you’re episode on Batman and I can’t let this go. Cool Hand Luke is NOT a western. At the beginning of the movie Paul Newman is cutting the heads of parking meters for f’s sake. It’s a prison movie. Love you guys. Keep up the great work.

Hahaha! I’m guessing that’s what we get for continuing to have this inside joke without context. At some point in the last 2-3 months, AJ mistakenly called Cool Hand Luke a western. Sean scolded him and now we continuously keep calling it a western movie for laughs. Wish I remembered what episode it was! Thanks for listening and commenting though.

Brilliant analysis of a great movie. However the goofy, shouty, “comedy riffing” is pretty tedious. Its not funny. When you quickly throw in a little bit of casual humour it’s fine but beyond that most of the “jokes” aren’t landing and get in the way of otherwise great work.
