I was a tourist in October 1986 in Lima on my way to Machu Pichu wondering why there were only 20 people there. There had been a bombing on the train a few weeks before and then another one in June.1986.Tourists were killed. This documentary gives me the shivers knowing I was in more danger than I realized.

After 56:30, you might have explained why anyone had to explain to the population what the patria actually was, its symbols and meaning. Perú was and still is, seven countries only recently communicating with each other: Arequipa of the southern litoral, Trujillo of the central coast, Piura and the northern coast, central Perú, Cuzco, and the east--both the selva and Lake Titicaca and its altiplano. Before the 1980s, none of them listened to Lima and knew little, if anything, of the other regions, except by legend and hearsay. Soldiers recruited in Lima who fought in the Upper Huamanga and Cuzco felt much the same as Americans fighting in the 1950s Korea and later, in Vietnam..

Yes there is. KZitemr BadEmpanada has released a two part series on the Peruvian history and politics during the 1990s. Part one focuses on the Shinning Path and the second part focuses on the effects that it had on Alberto Fujimori's dictatorship.

It is not a drug cartel but they work and protect for a drug cartel that nobody knows who they are. Different from Mexico or Colombia, drug lords in Peru work in the shadows (in some way smarter than the others) and they are using "The militarized Communist Party of Peru (the new name of Sendero Luminoso) as protectors.

The presentation wrapped up pretty good how things developed, as a peruvian that lived there during that time of crisis. However I must say it's been around 21 years since this war on terror ended and we can see how powerful the maoist-marxist movement has become, as per now they operate as a narco-guerrilla and they have infiltrated several unions and organizations in order to reorganize themselves as a political movement. They are indoctrinating high school teachers and now their candidate is about to become president of Peru(unbelievable!) who has openly said he will remove the constitution and call for a new one that aligns with the people´s interest. If this guy Pedro Castillo gets elected, Peru will become the next Venezuela or Cuba.

We've certainly had the ripple effect of US terrorism in South America. And Asia too. And in Africa. And of course Europe has had its share of US terrorism, theft and murder. Needless to say, the Native people of North America know all about US terrorism and genocide. And indeed the US working class could tell you about US state terrorism too - both black and white.

Yet, this is a unique case, since the Shining Path was much more of a cult of personality towards Gonzalo than any sort of actual Maoism or Marxism. In fact, members of the Path were so virulent about their worship for Gonzalo, that they opposed just about every other ideology, including other legitimate leftists.

@@davisoneill Once again, I have nothing against Marxism or the Peruvian people, only on the Shining Path. BadEmpanada, a leftist KZitemr, did a great job at explaining why the Shining Path is basically not something worth defending, because it did more harm than good to everyone involved. This guy has defended Cuba, China and Russia on multiple occasions, so the fact that he put the foot down for the Shining Path speaks volumes.

I am from Peru and what you mention is not an interpretation of a snobbish teacher, it is a fact. The Peruvian socialist party was divided into pro-Moscow and pro-Beijing. Sendero is born from this Chinese branch. They form their own party because they were not considered true revolutionaries by not taking up arms.
