I was at a BBQ gathering with my son and his wife. Most of the people were his age so I hung out with parents in another room. Suddenly, thru the voices and laughter of all the people, moving back and, talking, etc., I heard this song, and I was hooked. I had to ask a lot of people who the singers were, but I did until I got an answer. She even copied it for me and this song still has the power to move me and evoke memories and emotions.

When I was in school, a friend used to download random songs from online and burn them to discs that got passed around. One day, this song was on the disc, but it was not labeled right. I ripped the disc onto my computer and had this song saved as just "good song". I lost the song eventually and I was devastated. Eventually, I found it again, and it's just as good as I remember it.

Gold teeth and a curse for this town Were all in my mouth Only, I don't know how they got out, dear Turn me back into the pet I was when we met I was happier then with no mindset And if you'd took to me like a Gull takes to the wind Oh, I'd a-jumped from my trees And I'd a-danced like the king of the eyesores And the rest of our lives would have fared well New slang when you notice the stripes The dirt in your fries Hope it's right when you die, old and bony Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall Never should have called But my head's to the wall and I'm lonely And if you'd took to me like a Gull takes to the wind Well, I'd a-jumped from my trees And I'd a-danced like the kind of the eyesores And the rest of our lives would have fared well God speed all the bakers at dawn May they all cut their thumbs And bleed into their buns 'till they melt away I'm looking in on the good life I might be doomed never to find Without a trust or flaming fields am I too dumb to refine? And if you'd 'a took to me like, well I'd a-danced like the queen of the eyesores And the rest of our lives would have fared well

Dishant Goyal great song. it really resonates with me, i've been through something almost exactly like this. see, this is how i see it, the song is about how relatiomships can change you for the worst. "gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth, only i dont know how they got out" this line shows that the singer's feelings towards his surroundings have changed like everyrthing else. "turn me back into the pet i was when we met, i was happier then with no mind set" this means that when they had met and even before that, he was a 'pet'(pet here meaning sweet and innocent). "and if you took to me like a gull taked to the wind, i'd have jumped from my tree and i'd have danced the the king of the eyesores and the rest of our lives would've faired well" this is one of those "should-a would-a could-a" moments. basically its saying that is she had seen their relationship as something liberating and carefree (much like a gull-a type of bird-takes to the wind), then he'd havebeen encuoraged to jump from his tree (the tree being a metaphor for disconnection from the world) and the relationship could have lasted. "new slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries" 'new sland is a metaphor for change, kinda like how as you move through different stages of life you begin to speak differently. 'stripes' and 'the dirt in you fries' are metaphors for all the bad or unlikable things about life that you dont see as a young innocent child. thus the line translates to: you grow older and change when you start to see the bad things in life. then the lyrics go on to say "never should have called, but my heads to the wall and im lonley" this is something i directly relate to. it happens when you know someone is no good for you and you know nothing good will come from contacting them, but you are so lonley and they are the one and only familliar face around so you call anyway. "all the bakers at dawn, they all cut thier thumbs and bleed into thier buns till they melt away" bakers with cut thumbs are useless, bloody buns are useless. this is a metaphor for feeling totally and utterly unwanted and not needed - bad relationships do that to you. "I'm looking in on the good life I might be doomed never to find. Without a trust or flaming fields am I too dumb to refine?" these lyrics are a little more abstract. its obvious the the 'good life he may be doomed never to find' is a life with love. the second pare, however, means that he has no one he trusts and he lust or fire in him. he is asking himself if he should refine, or lower his expectations of love and settle for something he knows he doesnt want just to have love. this isnt a love song, its a song about failed love

I picked this song up in '09 when I got back to Ft Gordon from my first deployment (Iraq). Just sitting there trying to figure out myself all over again mentally and emotionally. Midwest kid that just wanted to get out and see the world. Went on a tour. Now I'm like, Tyler Durden. "Now what?". Go home, tell my stories of intrigue and adventure? I guess, sit here and act like everything is ok? (It's not and won't be).

I've been listening to this song for years, but I guess I've always dismissed the lyrics...? Which is pretty odd for me, because that's my thing to listen to lyrics. Then one day, I had some things go down with a hopeful prospect (Lack of better word) and when I listened to this song, it just clicked and the the lyrics just made since. It's been a new song to me ever since and I just can't get enough... The line "I never should of called, but my head is to the wall and I'm lonely" - Is amazing... How did I never hear this before? Mr. Mercer is a lyrical genius...
