Credits were the standard currency in the Star Wars galaxy - from the Old Republic to beyond the end of the Galactic Empire, credit chips were the easiest way to exchange goods, and allowed for a straightforward way to measure the worth of equipment, vehicles, and more. SF1 Discord: / discord
Recently I made a video on how much it would roughly cost to create the droid army, if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend you do so after seeing this video. But although we can calculate how much things are in the Star Wars galaxy in terms of credits, it’s hard to appreciate exactly how much that would come out to in our currencies. For the sake of this video, we’ll use the US Dollar as our source of comparison.
There are a few ways we can try to figure out the value of credits, and I’m going to go through each of them, so hit that like button, check out the StarForceOne Discord, and let’s get into it.
First off, there’s an old technique of worldbuilding where an author establishes the economy of their fantasy world by basing their fictional currency on a one-to-one basis of their real one. Since George Lucas was American and A New Hope was written in 1976, we need to figure out how much one dollar is worth from then to now. 46 years of inflation means that the value of one dollar now comes out to five dollars thirty-eight cents.
This would mean, for example, a DL-44 blaster like the one used by Han, which costs 750 credits, was worth $750 in 1977, translating to $4,035 today. Similarly, Luke gets 2,000 credits for his used speeder, which would make it worth $10,760 to us. What a hefty price!
This method is clearly flawed since $4,000 for a pistol is incredibly extreme, so let’s try something else. In Galaxy’s Edge it costs $220 to build a lightsaber - for those who don’t know this is a real-life location which has elements of the place added to Disney Star Wars. In the location, you get to be taken in, shown around and then given the parts to construct your own saber. Let me know in the comments if you’ve had the chance to do this experience at Galaxy’s edge!
So we can use this as a comparison point, believe it or not. Lightsabers in canon vary greatly in price, so let’s stick to legends where they cost 3,000. This means that each credit would be worth $13.63, meaning that a lightsaber would cost almost $41,000. What a crazy amount!
