4:08 skinny seat vs wide seat. If the new rider is only taking into account the seat height (on paper), they may be over looking some better fitting bikes with slightly higher, but narrower, seats. This is a very good point.

First free option to do if you have adjustable suspensions : Adjusting the Sag of the suspensions. Smaller riders are often lighter riders, so adjusting correctly the sag could lowered your seat height at a point that you wont need to spend to lower your bike.

I have the F700GS bought new in 2016. Light highway and some off road use. More of a garage queen but ridden enough to make me happy and keep wife happy too! Great all rounder for shorter riders OK ground clearance for the off road use an adventure bike is suited for. Plenty of low end and good highway behavior to about 120 KPH so ok for medium distance highway. But above that it is not too good due to vibration. Slow down a bit and it can take you far. Gas tank under seat makes huge difference in helping keep weight low which is VERY important to shorter riders. Need leverage on high center of gravity bikes and need to spread legs a bit in rougher or uneven terrain.

For my first adventure motorcycle I bought the KLE 500. I have changed the link on rear suspension to gain more ground clearance. But now my feet are not flat on the ground so I'm thinking to change the seat with lower. Thumbs up for the video. Safe Rides and Greetings from Greece.

I agree with your comment about narrow seat verses wide seat. The new(er) model CB500X now has a 830m seat height which is 20mm more than the older model, but due to being a narrower seat it feels that same.

I'm 166cm short and had come from a klx250s stock, it was ok apart from where I needed to put a foot down and couldn't feel the ground sometimes! I really want a drz400e with a low seat and link/forks slid up 30mm or just a dr650 adjusted to the low settings. I could have lived with the klx250s but it felt like mechanical abuse riding on the highway to riding areas south of Perth!

Puts a smile on my face watching vids from what I consider hot countries when the hosts are wearing winter clothing ! Living in Canada, sitting on my back deck at 7 am in my shorts and t-shirt mate 🙂.. Don't forget the danger of liquid cooling vs air coolings simplicity, I know that's not the point . But you do fall down as a new and /or shorter rider . Just get out there on something. You'll love it. Thanx Solid .

Hi Solid, I watch your channel all the time, great work I live in NSW and I am not that tall, at 5.6" I have a Yamaha XT250, which the seat height is fine for me I also have a Suzuki DR650E which I had professionally lowered ( by "Shock Treatment", here in NSW, the cost to have this done with new parts etc, was approx $1200 ) and I also installed a Sargeant LOW seat on the DR650E which is now about equal in seat height with the Yamaha XT250. I thought the Yamaha TW200 was unavailable in Australia?? Another bike that maybe good for beginners is the Honda AG-XR 200 for light trail work, with a standard seat height of 823mm, also this bike can be road registered. As mentioned in your video the Royal Enfield Himalayan is another good choice, also with an 810mm ( I think ) seat height

Im 5'10 but i have a short inseam..The Triumph Tiger has an adjustable seat and i can pretty much put both my feet on the ground..I find it lower then the f750gs you listed..

Bit disappointed that no mention of the Scariest Desert Sled as an option. Same retro look as the fall apart roast away Himalayan but with quality build and performance. Seen several sat up as adventure bikes. Lowering links aren't an option for PDS suspension bike (some KTM) Still a good video and left a like

I have modified most seats I have had ( being short ) probably the best mod to do without effecting the geometry of the bike . The lowering links actually DO effect the geometry of a bike , depending how low you drop . Dropping the front through the triple clamps is probably the second best lowering mod . As the more you drop the quicker turn in . The Best BUT most expensive way is professionally space lowering suspension ( as this does NOT effect geometry- just ground clearance . ). Don’t forget the Kawasaki Super supra ( or Stockman ) I know the Supra isn’t made in that road registration form anyone, but if you get a good second hand one can get parts no problems ( from the stockman ) And once again you fail the mention the RS 650 or Superdual- both relatively a low bike .

Good one. Now, if one were getting a dual sport for the wife, a new rider, and the bike would never see 100 km/h plus highways except very short stints to access a trail, and riding with a husband with a wr, but still wanting the ability to put longer range fuel tanks on, skid plates, and all the other “necessary” goodies, would you go xt250 or crf250l??! Tough one. New vid idea... “battle of the best for the wifey” dual sport, lol.

CRF250L is going to be the better option for accessories but as I said the XT wins for lightness and ease of use. Tough choice mate, good luck!

Awesome. Also just noticed that according to Yamaha’s spec page, the xt has a 9.6L tank, and allegedly burns just 1 L for every 32.2 km, giving that thing a theoretical 300 km range in ideal conditions. Impressive and negates the need for aftermarket tanks for moderate length trips. Also I see JNS eng does the plug and play led headlight for the XT250. Note I don’t work for any motorcycle company or aftermarket company! Makes a bit of sense now why Yamaha can still move the XT250 despite the existence of the crf250l . 31 lbs lighter too.

CRF250L all the way. Watercool engine, ABS, better instrument panel and can do short highway. XT250 is a dinosaur and cannot do any of those mentioned.

@@mattingray5651 I’m a short rider and I bought an XT250. I do a lot of highway and freeway riding in Southern California and it does just fine - wide open on flat highways will scoot you along at around 75 MPH, although one time on a slight downhill with a tailwind I saw an indicated 93MPH (actually about 85MPH - speedometer reads fast). I put street tires on it and took it to a track day at Willow Springs raceway and absolutely had a ball thrashing the crap out of it, passing many faster bikes in the twisties and running on the rev limiter all day. As a light dirt bike it handled the turns a lot better than many of the heavy street bikes. At the end of the day it just shrugged off the abuse. The XT250 is simple and indestructible. It’s not the most powerful or the fastest bike, and it doesn’t have the fancy gizmos or razzle dazzle that other bikes may have. It will simply get you there and then will get you back home with no fuss or drama. As a short rider being able to flat foot it is a bonus.

You would not need a stiffer spring if you lessened the suspension travel. The spring rate is based on the static and rider sag measurements, which apply regardless of the height of the bike. A stiffer spring might lessen the chance of the bash plate hitting the ground on a big impact but would give a terrible ride and make the handling much worse.

Any seat above 900mm is just a bit too much. I dont need to flat foot the bike but some ktms need a step ladder. Its getting a bit rediculas. Probibly easier to get custom platform riding boots than modify the bike 😆

you need tto get the true seat heights eg suzuki dr200 is way lower than tw200 & y 250 is higher than dr 200. personal experience from new proves it. Many women are around 160 cm there i think they would do a better, correct video

Being 6ft+ tall guy like yourself... what do you know about being short? :) You did not mention, shave the seat, that is a better and cheaper option. A lower seat is very expensive and does not really drop that much (like 0.4" or so). Shave the seat can drop down as much as 2" (in the case of CRF250L).
