Skeleton landlord was a truly weird experience. I was tripping really hard on acid after a party stayed in a hotel afterward, I turned on the tv and struggled to find something to watch. Adult swim came to mind, got excited and started switching channels to find it. I literally switch to adult swim as the show started I guess, i watched beginning to end and was just inthralled completely mesmerized. It gave me a weird XRA vibe without all the extra jokes and wildness. I had no idea what I had watched, no name, nothing, had zero clue how long it even was. The acid obviously didn’t help. Well the following week just gave up on trying to figure out what I had watched. Thought it was just some random adult swim bump that felt like a full episode The next time I tripped with some good friends I talked about the experience and we all went on a wild search to find this ridiculous show “bump” I couldn’t stop talking about everything time I was high. Everyone was completely dumbfounded when I found it after almost 2 years, proved it was real. My friends thought it was some weird shit I came up with while high. Happy I got to watch it while it was tv, was a true “experience” that caught me off guard to say the least.

My problem with this show is that adult swim's biggest strength has always been spotlighting truly original material. The best adult swim shows may all give off an "adult swim" vibe, but none of them feel generic, they may be wacky and absurd but done in a way not quite seen before. This show on the other hand feels wacky for the sake of being wacky, almost like a parody of a show that would get greenlit by [as].

@harryfromends
10 ай бұрын
I agree, but interested to get your perspective on why?
@Insaineiac
10 ай бұрын
@@harryfromends Well the old adult swim was still back before all art was subjected to the modern sensibilities stranglehold we're stuck in now. Adult Swim wasn't just a name, it earned it's reputation because it was not appropriate for children!! Even overgrown children like those that run it now!! The unique shows of old A.S. didn't used to feel at all like "TV content," something mass produced to be inoffensive for general audiences. That's why it used to be great!!! The shows took bold chances, they were edgy, raunchy, wild and unrestrained!! Anything could happen!! As you watched these shows you got an overwhelming sense that they clearly weren't made to please the average general audience, and that depth of connection made it something truly special and amazing to watch. That "general audience" just didn't get it and moved on, so if you found you were one of the weirdos who enjoyed that sorta stuff, you found yourself amongst only like-minded individuals. A.S. used to be like a cool secret club in that sense. When I first started watching, it began with an hour of King of the Hill, followed by an hour of Family Guy. If you stayed up past that then the really good stuff started! Aqua Teens, Squidbillies, Children's Hospital, Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, Robot Chicken, etc. So many more classics I can't remember the titles of off the top of my head. I remember seeing skeleton landlord on there at some point! Btw I know there's always been the anime aspect of A.S. too, but that used to be just one component of it, with plenty more to A.S. if that wasn't your thing. Now airing anime on the weekends has become the network's entire identity! They now air next to NONE of the classic shows unique to only their archives, occasionally we get a little Robot Chicken, Aqua Teens, and sometimes some Your Pretty Face, but even then those showings are increasingly rare, few and far between, sandwiched in-between reruns of the same basic adult shows everyone's already seen 1000X before!! Nobody wanted more re-runs of Futurama, or Bob's Burgers, or American Dad, the same episodes of the same shows we've already seen before and could see again if we wanted on a dozen other channels! You can tell the staff that's working there now has an entirely different attitude towards the channel than their predecessors. You can tell they're the kind of people that have spent more time on the internet getting offended rather than trolling and shitposting. They have no desire to maintain what used to be the channel for edgelords. They're scared to take any real chances, they're afraid of "offending people." They just want to watch their animes and spew leftist politics, like most people these days. That's the new target audience for Adult Swim, the channel that used to have no target audience! It was just people united under weirdness and insane fun mayhem!! It's a shame what it's become, but what a ride it was for those who got to experience it! I'm glad I did! Sorry for typing all this, lol!

I mean...if you think about it... We could very much see something like this again. I really liked the pilot, and on its own (visually), it vaguely resembles something made by PFFFR. Y'know. Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel, Superjail, and most recently, The Shivering Truth. Three of which were greenlit, produced and aired for [as]. PFFFR are very much affiliated with the channel and most of their projects get semi-regular rotation, albeit in the AM and commonly on Sundays. So, if [as] bought the premise (and whatever that might entail), and a studio that regularly pumps out material kind of like this to a degree, I could see something being developed in the future. But I know you won't get exactly what you found here. Good video, dawg. Subbed. (Edit: Superjail was under the PFFR umbrella, but Augenblick and Ian Miller were the ones who designed and animated it - so technically, that's from the online YT world, too, technically)

@@harryfromends It's on the platform MeansTV which is basically a streaming service for a lot of Leftist content (usually in the form of documentaries) but it also contains a lot of original content made for the streaming platform that feels like if Tim & Eric read Kropotkin and created a Tulpa. It has a lot of dark comedy content that focusses on current social issues from a view point I would consider to be "Laughing through the pain". Little Lions Den was actually pitched to Adult Swim but AS said it was too out there for even them, so MeansTV picked it up and used the point that Adult Swim was scared of it as a marketing point. In regards to what part of it was "leftist", the series is basically a black comedy surrounding the topics of the horrors of life as a veteran. With half the show surrounding war and the trauma of war and how it can basically drive one insane. It can be a hard watch at times.. But it's worth it. It reminds me a lot of Chris Morris' JAM but more dream-like and disturbed. Because MeansTV wants to be as accessible as possible to greater audiences, you can email them and ask them if you can get a free lifetime subscription and they'll just give you it. Sort of like Itchio. They actually had a drive-by shooting at their original headquarters, actually targetting them for their politics as a company. Which is why their address at the bottom of emails is now the address of the White House. I think it's a great streaming platform that's easy to use and has some good low-key stuff in their along with a lot of great comedy. Little Lions Den is a great show too.

Wait, people actually liked the idea of a show where a landlord was the good guy? Am I missing something? Like the "shrill" voice of the skeleton is like, not even an issue in the first place. The issue is the continued glorification of landlording lmfao

I feel like they were going for anothe Xavier renegade angel. But i dont think a show like that can really be around anymore. Any expermental media is kinda soft banned at this point. The closest we get to expermental or obsurdist shows we get is rick and morty...

That’s an interesting point about that kind of absurdism being soft banned, although I do believe that Skeleton Landlord could easily have at least one season just to test the waters

@harryfromends I would really enjoy a season of it. But it all depends on how it does. I'm lucky enough to work as an assistant editor at a production house. The issue I forsee with alot of new shows, despite only having worked on one so far, is that season one is the season where they figure things out.

Damn shame, really...the visuals alone are triggering off that "fight or flight" reaction, just like [AS] back in the day, like "12 Oz. Mouse", first couple of seasons of Eric Andre, "Perfect Hair Forever", and the higher level pain index episodes of "Space Ghost" (the fully-looped version of "Warren", f'rinstance). It's not a network that you watch for "normal", "safe" "entertainment". So I never thought I would see something that's "too Adult Swim for Adult Swim". Or even contemplated what that would look like! Same time, though...you can tell when they're trying too hard. When that happens, that very REAL edge that [AS] has in their most brain-mangling work is very obviously not there! The sad thing is, it almost seems like the channel was a thing of a certain time, with a certain weird energy that people don't know or understand anymore. Or at the very least, no one in charge there does. Plus, there is KZitem...no one at MTV these days would have ever greenlit insanity such as "Sifl and Olly" or groundbreaking work like "Aeon Flux". But if you do work like that at present and if you pitch it to a commercial network, well... you're either very rich and stupid, or very rich and insane. Platforms such as this are where eyes are now, and as noted, the interaction between viewers is JUST AS valuable now as the quality of content. ...which, curiously, is yet another thing that had a lot to do with WHY [AS] worked in its "peak weirdness period". We have them to thank for prototyping the very media engine that will likely destroy them...which, when you consider it, might actually be the most twisted and deranged Adult Swim production of them all!

Brilliant comment! You’ve delved into a lot of very interesting areas & I agree with your assessment that Skeleton Landlord tries too hard to recreate that Adult Swim edge, as well as the fact that KZitem hosts some incredible animation and wacky ideas, and truly is the place to be - and Adult Swim being the perpetrators of their own downfall would be a truly Adult Swim thing to do.
