Siege and Relief of Chitral
The siege and relief of the fort at Chitral in the remote mountainous region beyond the North-West Frontier of India, held by Sikh and Kashmiri soldiers and their British officers from 3rd March to 20th April 1895; that caused such a stir in late Victorian Britain.
1. Afzal-ul-Mulk was the Mehtar (ruler) of the princely state of Chitral on 6 November 1892, who ruled briefly after the death of his father, Mehtar Aman-ul-Mulk, usurping the right of his elder brother Nizam-ul-Mulk. His reign lasted two months and seven days before he was assassinated by his uncle Sher Afzal.
2. Sher Afzal ( 31 December 1923) was a son of Mehtar Shah Muhammad Afzal II of Chitral and a brother of Mehtar Aman ul-Mulk, who lived most of his life in exile in Afghanistan and Badakhshan. He managed to place himself on the Mehtar's seat for a few weeks in the period leading up to the Chitral Expedition.
3. Nizam ul-Mulk was the Mehtar of the princely state of Chitral and ruled it from 1892 until his assassination in 1895.
4. Amir ul-Mulk ( 23 December 1923) was the Mehtar (ruler) of the princely state of Chitral. He assumed power after arranging for the murder of his brother Mehtar Nizam ul-Mulk. His tenure as Mehtar was brief as he was removed from office in less than three months, before having the chance to consolidate his position.
5.His Highness Sir Shuja ul-Mulk ( 13 October 1936) was the Ruler of the State of Chitral, and reigned it for 41 years until his death in 1936.
His rule saw the State of Chitral experience an extensive period of unwonted peace. He introduced widespread and far-reaching changes and administrative reforms.Shuja ul-Mulk rendered important services to the British Empire during the Third Anglo-Afghan War. He was invested as a Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) by the British in 1903,and Knight Commander of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) in 1919. He was granted a personal gun salute of 11 guns,and the title of His Highness.
