No Irish soldiers died in the actual event this movie is based on, which is amazing considering the odds they faced. But its true had French supported Mercenaries decided to not allow for a surrender the Irish soldiers would have died from lack of food and water alone. Honestly I think the reason they got spared and taken prisoner was purely for political reasons and a ransom opportunity, not because the Mercs were feeling merciful.

Its not accurate, the UN actually sent two relief forces to try and save them but both were turned back by the enemy(where the UN lost 5 dead). Also the location shown in film is incredibly not accurate to the real location, and in real life the Irish troops had 2 armoured cars that were absolutely vital to the defence(to the extent that a large reason for their inability to hold out any longer was the armoured cars becoming inoperable)

Politics at that time was complicated. If the UN praised them they would be seen as weak. France and Belgium probably would have been blamed for their part in the siege and wouldnt have been happy. Irish-French relations would break down which were kinda important at the time. The USA would have gotten mad at France and Belgium for supplying arms to fight against a country that was on their side, Ryssia would have been delighted and might be able to set up a communist regime in France, America would send in the troops to stop communism spreadng in France and then all hell could have broken loose. Yes that is all theoretical but at the time you can see how it would be likely to happen.

***** Yeah I remember liking it when I saw it too. It was especially interesting since I had found a photo journal book written by a young Russian conscript sent to Afghanistan. It's called "Afghanistan: A Russian Soldier's Story" by a guy named Vladislav Tamarov, and the two stories really complemented each other. I'd suggest checking it out sometime; it's a really quick read, but crazy interesting, if memory serves.

that won't happen any time soon, unless it's also available elsewhere. they currently, and for the foreseeable future (until marvel stops printing money with their movies and tv shows) have an exclusivity deal with marvel. however, the closest you'll likely get is if they do indeed decide to go ahead with picking up young justice for a 3rd season.

Should also be ashamed because you people don't know the difference of cowardice and gallantry. Throw those whiskey in to the ocean. Branding them cowards is so fcked up. And it's not the first time that incident was happen. Even the WW2 veterans was branded cowards and traitors for joining the Brits.

Just saw the whole movie. Very good. I did not know Connor Cruise O`Brien worked for the UN. He should have told the truth about the people who were killed at the radio station. I never liked that man. The reputation of the UN was apparently more important than the truth.

Just a bunch of untrained African with machete and rusty Ak-47. Don't get too cocky. If you were that good at war you wouldn't have been an English colony for hundreds of years. I doubt those rogue French had anything to do with this other than leadership. You were basically fighting an unruly mob, not that hard to defeat by trained, entrenched soldiers. You still surrendered in the end.

Because of a lack of water and bullets, You see the movie "Lone survivor" ? Markus Luthrell, the only surviving Seal said himself the movie was exaggerated and it was a team of less then 10 local Taliban fighters that hunted the elite 4 man Seal team down and killed 3 and critically wounded him. The Taliban members had little or no training and were also using rusted Soviet era AKs and RPGs. Despite having no training these rebels had air and artillery support AND outnumbered the Irish forces. This battle was nothing short of a miracle. Neither you or I would've probably lasted a second in this situation.

Unfortunately one of Eamon De Valera's legacies to the Republic of Ireland was heavy censorship in the news. A tradition he began when he forbade Irish newspapers from reporting the deaths of Irish Free State citizens who had died fighting the Axis while serving in Allied armies. The same Irish government that sent the 1st wave of Irish peacekeepers to the Congo dressed in wool uniforms and armed with bolt action Lee-Enfields slandered the men of this company as cowards despite their heroic defense against incredible odds.

the recorded radio log as ordered by Commandant, Pat Quinlan was one of the best strategic critical thinking decision, I guess that might play some role why the Irish govt. finally recognized them heroes.. I wish they made it public but I guess it will not ..sadly majority of those men are long gone before they where recognized....the movie might be partly exaggerated to some extent but the truest fact that those men hold their ground for 5 days in combat is something noble and not short of a heroic..as former scout ranger with tropical jungle xp...my snappiest salute to all Irish men who fought in Jadotville Siege
