Never get too big for your boots. Your worth is decided by others, not you. It happens so many times. It's such a shame when it happens to someone who was great at what they did as Simon was. I always liked seeing his show as a teenager. Why does money always ruin things. He was making good money, but as usual, the Oliver Twist syndrome kicked in. I WANT SOME MORE. 😢

Not everyones cup of tea but I have a lot of respect for the guy, turned his back on fame could have gone on for years, met him in 1970 at the demonstration against the jamming of Radio Caroline,, with his great buddy Ronan O Rahilly, had a tea with him, quite rational, and talked endlessly about the establishment,, think he said his favourite time was launching Caroline it suited the maverick inside him,, remember he smoked like a chimney one after the other, but seemed content with himself, said he had the world in his hands but found it was corrupt and self serving, made him into a monster, anyway I liked him

He wasn't dropped by anyone, apart from the audience. In the late 60's london weekend television began, and was having a hard time getting audiences. They tried to get Dee to cross from the BBC to them. He made it known at the BBC the competition was chasing him with their cheque book, and requested a big salary increase. The BBC had always found him difficult and arrogant so said.....nope. So Dee went to london weekend television, where his show was given a bad slot on Sunday night, the audience figures bombed and his contract wasn't renewed. He had a bad and difficult reputation, so nobody else wanted him......and that was that.

@@eddienewall5033 Unlikely, given that Gary Glitter didn't even start releasing singles until 1972, and Simon Dee's TV career was finished by 1970.

I'm gutted. Just read that Simon is gravely ill and not expected to live many more days. I hope it's not true but I fear it is. As the very first voice on Radio Caroline, he deserves respect and appreciation always.

Good to see part 1 & 2 (i missed this on broadcast tv) and a bit more of the Dee story. Looks like he made the right decision to allow himself to be dropped from tv fame (he had no choice as it was all controlled by a few-- still is of course). Simon Dee (I didn't know he is now 70) really was ahead of his time and thats the bottom line I guess. An early Jonathan Ross (as said in the show) type that the esablishment were just not ready for-- Even though the public were.

i delivered his papers for the last 2 years of his life, he was such a nice guy...but to be fair, he lost everything, he was living in a council flat and now after actually looking into his history, dare i say he probably deserved nothing less. Knew his youngest son too...went to my school R.I.P

My grandfather was the person who bankrupted him I recently found out. I'd not heard of him till my dad told me about this a few weeks ago. He shut down Mecanno/Hornby Railways as well. Always known about that though. Suppose my grandpa's a bit of an arsehole to many ppl then for doing this? Chairman of Natwest bank for West End of London he was. He died last year. RIP grandpa.

Tony Blackburn, as I understand it was wrong there. I believe Alvin Stardust (was the pop star he was asked to interview rather then Gary Glitter. It was when he was supposed to be at Radio 210 in Reading where Dee had been hired as one of the launch presenters in 1976 (alongside the likes of Steve Wright and Mike Read). If we was only told about it when the interviewee was on his way I get why Dee got the hump about it, as one would need more time to prepare a proper interview. But the fact that he walked out there and then seems to indicate a behavioural pattern that dogged him throughout - and ultimately cost him - his broadcasting career.

Lot of time for Simon,,met him on a RNI demonstration he was not has he was depicted, he really seemed happy, not being part of the rat race, him and Ronan O Rahilly were so a like, think now he has more people understand his logic, he just didn't want to be apart of it anymore, he was better suited to Caroline the rebel, on there he really sounded happy

Shortly before he was sacked by the BBC Simon Dee topped a poll as the most unpopular personality on t. v. He was extraordinarily arrogant and that counter against him back in the 1970s. Very different today, of course. Can you imagine the BBC dismissing Jeremy Clarkson?

He wasn't sacked by the BBC, he went over to ITV which paid more after being refused a pay rise by Bill Cotton, then head of light entertainment at the BBC.

Bill Cotton offered him a 20% pay cut to test his loyalty to the corporation. That's why he went to LWT who had no idea how to make TV. They put him up against David Frost, a heavyweight interviewer, in the wrong slot with terrible artsy guests
