He has such a great face and was a real pleasure to work with, please pass along my regards to him. I have lots of photos of him, some with him in this outfit, some of him as a prospector, which I'm planning on doing a painting of. If you would like, I can get you a print of the painting when I finally do it if you'd like. You can get in touch with me at atk1961@aol.com and I'll let you know when that happens. Very nice demo. I am a retired mathematician that took up painting mostly floral and water landscapes in water color. I have been wanting to expand my horizons in to figurative painting and have been lazy about practicing prior to any real attempt because just by eye getting a good likeness out of my hand is laborious. I had never thought of the proportion divider and now after your video I am soon to buy one off of Blick art supplies. Thanks again, great demo!

I really appreciate all the small details you give, like removing some materials from the paper before laying down another one that would conflict and muddy the drawing. And also how you explained the camera was off to the side a fair bit and squishing the horizontal plane for the viewer, because I was thinking it did look more narrow and it was great to get this explanaition.

I'm always so inspired by your charcoals. All your work of course but something about the expressiveness of your charcoal work that really speaks to me. Thanks so much Steve-O, I really appreciate the share! When I lived in Minneapolis and started painting historical subjects, I painted mountain men (Jeremiah Johnson was my favorite movie for a long time), and fur trappers, since there was so much history of it in Minnesota. I LOVED going to the rendezvous that were held in the area and getting my reference from the men and women who dressed in period dress. I learned so much about the history from them and love it to this day. Of course the grizzled old mountain man in this drawing was just a romantic notion of what they would have looked like. Rarely did they live this long, right? Thanks buddy!

Those divider are pretty amazing! I used to do alot of western art work. Most of the subjects were from memory and experiences. Usually I would make a small sketch and get the thing mapped out then move to draw it on larger drawing paper, watercolor paper or what have you. Every once in awhile I'd have trouble with enlarging the drawing and get the proportions right. Those dividers would have been the ticket!

Steve; great tutorial, ' im a fellow artist. Along time ago i was watching a sign painter do some lettering, and walked up to him to point out a mistake to him. he blew his stack and got really mad. i apolagized and told him i was just trying to help. he told me to go to you know where! so, I noticed where you made a mistake, but i learened my lesson! I wont tell you! "You have a nice sence of humer, its even better than my spelling! A big ten thumbs up! my wife tells me im all thumbs! question; is using dividers sort of like cheating at cards/ ??? by the way, your drawing terned out great.
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken, thanks for the great comment. You know, I've been asked this question before about using a tool like a divider and it being cheating, and it's a good question. Here's how I look at it. It's just a tool to get me where I'm going. All it does is load the front end of the drawing with the correct points as to where things start or stop. If someone was to come up to my drawing board and look at all those marks, could they then do the drawing? Of course not! The marks are just the beginning, albeit an accurate beginning. You now have to make sense of all those marks and by making decisions with your pencil in your hand, turn them into a beautiful work of art. If we artists weren't allowed to take measurements as we went along, then all those times you've seen an artist drawing or painting where they hold out their brush (or pencil) to the model and use it to measure something, they would be cheating, right? When I went to university and took life drawing, this was one of the techniques we learned. Would our professors have taught us to cheat? Of course not, they were simply giving us the tools to be better artists. Architects used these all the time, would you consider that cheating? Well, that's my 2 cents for what it's worth (not even 2 cents). The bottom line is that you can use it if you want, but if you're not comfortable with it, it's good as it can be if you want to skip it. LOL! But I sure do appreciate you asking the question and I hope my answer helped. Draw On!!!

@SteveAtkinsonFineArt
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I'm not using any graphite, or pencils on this. It's either willow charcoal or charcoal pencils. Graphite has a shine and makes the paper resistant to working charcoal over the top of it, so it's best to avoid working both mediums together. The white is either a stick of Conte or a General's Charcoal White Pencil #558. I use them both in this video. Hope that helps and thanks for watching. Let me know how it goes for you!

Hi Essie, I have had people ask me to do that before, and usually I say no. Just because the reference that they have is not good enough to work with. But last year I was commissioned to do a painting and replace the face of a cowboy I had painted in another painting, with the collector's brother's face. And I needed to make him look younger than he was in the photo reference supplied. I did it and it worked out good, but have since decided that I won't do it again.

Draw Paint Repeat I just wondered, it seems like it would be difficult. I guess with your years of experience you get asked many things. Glad you could share your time with us. Great reminder on how to get proportions correct.

Do you remember what painting you totally completely finished that gave you the spark where you said I want to learn more? You probably have said it before but I missed it .

Hi JBG! Gawd, what a great question. I had to really think about this for a couple of days to come up with something that made sense. Thanks for asking it. The honest answer is that there were many of those along the way. I do remember when I was just teaching myself to paint in the mornings before I'd go off to work, I'd do small paintings for 2-3 hours every morning. Every once in a while I'd stumble onto what I thought was my best painting yet. Though I couldn't tell you what made it more successful than any of my others, I just knew there was something there that worked for me. This kept me getting up early and motivated to keep going. Of course, if I look back at those paintings now, they're better than other ones of that era, but they aren't what I'd consider good now. But the important thing was that they were good for then and that keeps you showing up at the easel or drawing board and that keeps you growing and getting better. Celebrate those wins baby!!!

Hi. Great job, and video. I will follow you because you are generous and honest with your knowledge which is great. I'm artist too and I'm struggling with models. I thinks that if I have your contrat type, thinks will run better. Could you let me know where I can find a contrat type? Thanks in advance.

Hi Ricardo, I'll put doing a contract video on my to-do list and include a link to a copy of the artist model release form I use. Thanks for the question.

Keep the divider parallel to what you’re measuring.

Well....How About That...NOW: I Know What "THAT" Is! My Grandpa Worked for "Bell Telephone Company" For 40 Years...Never Missed a Day...Walked 20 Miles Each Way...OH. WAIT. That was to School....Barefoot. I Inherited His Drafting Table and About 5,000 "Nibs" and 300+ Dip Pens, and Interesting Objects(Like the Proportional Divider) Wrapped In Velvet. I Loved that Man.But, Still, To This Day, I Cannot Draw, Or Cut A STRAIGHT LINE The First Time...EVEN WITH A RULER! [Or a Paper-Cutter]....I KNOW, Right?! I Have a TON Of Erasers, Rulers, Pencils...BUT...I'm A Better "Watercolorist" .I Subscribed. I Think I Like You.

What a great message to start the day with! Thanks Sandi, he sounds like a wonderful man. I'm glad I could help solve that mystery. It's a tool that was used more long ago and has sort of fallen by the wayside. But I promise it'll help you hone your skills. Thanks for the sub, I WON'T LET YOU DOWN....grin!

12:40 I love crosshatching! It is such a bold effect and I think it always looks so interesting and dynamic. Also because it is what a lot of my favourite comic book artists use on their work too, both in pencil and also in ink. Do you ever do portraits or other drawings using ink and brush techniques? I would love to see that :)

April 11, 2019 I have used these dividers before, but your narrative is not particularly clear for the person who has never used such a device. One word you unfortunately avoided is "ratio". If you are taking a photo and increasing it 4 times, you will have a 1-4 ratio (1:4). Once the divider is set to your desired ratio, that ratio is maintained throughout all your other measurements. Changing the divider's ratio will distort your measurements and final drawing. One other comment concerning the dividers; some manufacturers make the dividers out of wood, plastic or metal. The tips of the wooden dividers are rather blunt (1/8 "). Not only does this reduces the accuracy, but the wooden dividers weigh more and are a little on the bulky side. You can increase the accuracy by carefully placing a "notch" or mark in the middle of each pointed end. The plastic dividers have a more pointed tip and the accuracy is much better. The metal dividers usually have the sharpest tip. They are machined to better tolerances, but they also cost considerably more. If money is a concern, I would recommend the proportional dividers made out of plastic. I enjoyed your drawing and your candor about not following what you preach. :)

Hi Jimmy, I'm sorry you found the explanation lacking. I do the best I can and try to be thorough, but I'm by no means perfect. Thanks for watching.
