My dad was special forces here in the UK, and he taught me a lot when i was younger, but how much of it i can remember is actually gonna cause problems if i do find myself in a survival situation...so, I've been relearning. these definitely make it easier tho for a newbie. I've also been learning lock picking (for urban erm... foraging :) as well as knot tying, tarp setups, water purifying, knot tying, compass reading, fire building, shelf stable food prep, etc etc trying to cover the all important C's as well as some other life skills i guess. But i'd really like to see you do a video on climbing and rappelling. i do actually know a technique for rappelling using only a rope but it is different from what my father originally taught me so i'd definitely be invested in seeing some different techniques as i'm sure there are more than one. and how to ascend after abseiling? i heard a guy talking about using a prusik knot but did not show a demonstration. love all your vids! happy trails :)

Great traps for getting food. In my neck of the woods, tree snares for squirrels works good. I use three simple lassos made out of thin copper wire nailed or wrapped around a tree branch. Any type of nut works for bait. (BTW: I roast the squirrels over an open flame to kill any possible flea or mite that possibly is carrying plague or other disease. Then I pull back the fur and skin and eat the meat. )

I agree with the workings of these traps but I wonder if you might respond to "Survival`s Cool , Deadfall Dead Weight " article. His thinking is that the effort to manage these traps versus energy expended and energy acquired is a O sum. I would enjoy your thoughts. Thanks for your expose..
@recall5811

Here are my thoughts. There is no need to convince someone of this. This trap takes 1 minute to carve. So if someone says that is too much energy then I question their abilities and thought process. Trapping is a numbers game. Thanks for watching

@@recall5811 I respect that fact for sure, there is no discussion as to the abuilities of the traps, the articlsited infers that the caloric return may be not high enough to justify the effort to install and maintain the traps. Loose quote is "If it takes 200 calories to check the traps and maintain them and the calories returned are less there is no benifit.". I think he quotes about 200 calories for a dressed ou squirrel.. all the best.

Has anyone ever caught anything using a figure 4 trap??? I'm not knocking this product or the idea of this trap, which I first became aware of when I was 12, I'm now 49 years old. Snaring rabbits I'm a pro at. Using lite cord as a snare with a bent sapling I'm good at. But the figure 4 trap, I have never caught anything.

@@recall5811 I have been doing a little research into this trap and the best I have found is Shaun Woods who is a fanatical about mouse traps and catching mice. He has a great video on the figure 4 trap in action. I think the trick for this trap is a much longer arm reach that goes right back under the rock dead fall. Very educational to watch. This is where I think I always went wrong, to short on the baited arm and simply not using a heavy enough dead fall. Shaun uses a large slab of natural stone to show how it's done. Like I said I'm not trying to knock this product i just want to use the figure 4 with success. I'm just one that likes to get it right.

I like the simple trigger on the wooden deadfall. Went out in the back yard and made one in just a couple of minutes. I do believe there is a limitation with regard to bait. If you smear peanut butter on the string, great. But, if you are out in the woods without something to smear on the string, how do you bait the trap? I might be able to unwind bank line, insert a seed and then tighten up the strand. The ease of set up makes it worth experimenting with and trying different types of bait. Thanks for the vid.

It's a nice metal version, but at 45$/ea, that's 450$ for 10, 900$ for 20, and an additional 3.4 oz per trap, 34 oz, and 68 oz total respectively. So, while they might be better than hand made ones in functionality, the space, and weight, and cost wouldn't be worth it. Perhaps if they're kept in a trunk, or back seat, for people who can afford them. (I say 10, or 20, because that's how many you had mentioned about setting up with the hand carved ones.)

I know its not PC to carry to some people, but if they only knew how much of a comfort, and necessity it is to have a weapon handy. Even a .22 wheelgun would work in most cases. May be someday you can cover the necessity of having a firearm ready in the event it may be needed. Keep them coming Cpl. Love your vids.

First I want to say great video both traps work great. I am not a proponent of your bought figure 4 dead fall and you are incorrect about how fiddly they are and how long they take to make I have made hundreds and used them successfully. I got started years ago in the boy scouts with them, but if you want a good video on them try the improved figure 4 by hedge hog bush craft. You are correct about the time or fiddlyness if you don't practice just like any skill if you wait till you really need it and haven't practiced its not going to work and take for ever with nothing more than a sharp rock I can make dead falls surprisingly quick.

I agree with you. Deadfalls take too long to set up and don't work all the time. I carry 3 rat traps (giant mouse traps) in my backpack. I have light chain attached to them to stake to the ground. The cost about $3 apiece.

I've tried this numerous times and ive found that the trigger ( bait string ) isn't very sensitive. In my opinion this trap isnt very good and a figure of 4/ piaute deadfall are a better trap. I do love it's simplicity but it has its disadvantages because if you use a real heavy stone it seems to lock up the mechanism more so a lot more force is needed against the string to engage the trap of. Maybe i could be wrong and it's myself that is doing it wrong, anyone any suggestions?

The only concern I’d have with the pre-assembled metal figure 4 deadfalls would be with rust developing on the pivot pins making the joints not move. Probably not really an issue though. I’m sure they’re made with a high enough grade of stainless steel to keep rust from forming being as their intended use is in an outdoor setting.
