Thanks, Mark! I never would have thought to use the color mask that way (I thought it was a useless option). I didn't know about sampling a larger area like that, either, but that is also extremely useful. Excellent video explaining masking, one of Lightroom's most useful additions in years.

Mark, great video. Still kind of a newb to LR and learning something all the time. I've been watching your vids for about a month now. I subscribed after the first one I saw. I very much appreciate your level headed approach and no drama in your videos. You just show us your cool side when going through your subject. As an older guy, I like that a lot and plan to stick around a while. Your videos are chock full of good stuff, and I personally get a lot from them. Still a photo newb but I think moved from novice to a little more informed. Been shooting manual for a while and have just started shooting raw. Big difference. I have a Z6, 14-30 f4 S, 24-70 f4 S, 50 f1.8 S, 28-300 f3.5-5.6 F, and most recently a 200-500 f5.6. It's so much fun shooting and learning, and your videos make it that much better. Thanks for your work and please keep them coming!!! -Bud

Thanks Mark! I learned of these features awhile ago, but have really struggled with using them. You explained it very clearly and got to the heart of what they mask. I think that was what kept throwing me off. Of all the other videos I’ve seen, I don’t recall anyone talking about the option key. That makes it so much easier to visualize the edit. Going to check out your masking series too. I’ve learned most of my Lightroom and photoshop skills through either trial and error or KZitem. I’ve learned a lot this way, but I’m really looking for something more structured. Where did you learn how to use them and how long did it take you to become confident enough to start teaching others?

Thanks so much David! I've been using Luminosity Masks within Photoshop for years so when LR released their version in Range Masks it was a seamless transition. Once you use range masks in a couple real life scenarios you'll get the hang of it - it's super simple, but just take a bit of fiddling with it at first.

Hey Mark! Great content as always! Just wanted to make a note: this feature has been present for A LONG TIME in Darktable, a free RAW processor. The endless combination of masking you can do with this software is staggering. Not only can you select affected areas by luminosity, you can also select them by color (which comes very handy in local adjustments), and then intersect them with brushes, radial filters, etc. You name it! You should give it a try!
