From the Academy Award nominated film, The Sixth Sense. With the help of child psychologist Malcolm Crowe, Cole decides to confront the ghosts that visit him. One such girl tells him that she was killed by her own mother who fed her poisons to keep her ill and thus dependent on her. The mother also gains the sympathy from friends and such for having a daughter who seems to be always ill and never got better and then died. Note that the mother wears red at the funeral while everyone else is wearing black red is the metaphorical color in the film for death.
There is a condition called Munchausen Syndrome in which the person who is "afflicted" by it does injury to him or herself to gain attention and care from others. Or the person feigns illness or disease so as to engender sympathy from others.
In Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, the perpetrator inflicts injury on another so as to create a dependency by that person, so that the perpetrator feels needed by the victim. Often the perpetrator comes across as quite caring to hide their own malevolent deeds.
For clarification - Variety Magazine did an interview of the director and actors in The Sixth Sense to celebrate the film's 20th anniversary. In this interview, Mischa Barton, who played Kyra Collins, stated that her mother was the one poisoning her.
