What I really like about this coach...He feeds real balls to his students - fast with topspin!!!!!!!! Anyone can hit the light junk most coaches feed players. That just makes them feel good.

Top notch video for coaching. When coaching I like to teach the three P’s in shot selection. First we have purpose. Why are we hitting a slice, top spin, flat drive, and the tactical reason for using that shot. Second is placement. Where on the court do you want your shot to land to accomplish your purpose. Third is pace which includes ball speed as well as net clearance or trajectory. So if you are running for a well hit shot hit deep to the corner you will hit a return that goes crosscourt, with lots of net clearance ( if your opponent stays back) so you will have time to recover and get back in position. Tennis is an athletic chess match. So many players just hit and hope the ball goes in or that the opponent will hit it out.

Good approach to teaching the slice. I like the way Philipe (sp?) hits his volleys and slice especially the way he seems to delay turning his head forward by looking behind the racquet after he slices. Excellent.

Daniel - very nice. appreciate you posting this great video. I've been playing for over 40 yrs now so I guess I qualify as an 'old school' player, so I appreciate maybe more than most the usefulness and advantages of having a really good slice BH. I've got a one-hander - and hit top, flat and slice. A couple of things you didn't mention on your video is that having a slice BH is very useful on high and wide shots. Secondly - something that seems to have been forgotten/abandoned in the modern game is hard offensive slice - both from the back court and as an approach - and the inside out and/or sidespin slice - which is most useful as an approach shot. These 2 shots have been almost totally abandoned on the FH side - have to go back to Jack Kramer I think to find a great player who utilized a slice/sidespin FH to great effect, but it's sadly disappearing on the BH side as well even though Edberg used it to great effect and before him Ken Rosewall (who utilized a hard slice BH almost exclusively). Bernie Tomic is perhaps the only current male player that mixes in a hard sidespin/slice FH on occasion to great effect and I've seen him really fool players with his inside/out and/or sidespin BH down the line, but I rarely see players utilize the hard BH slice as an attacking shot. Even players like Fed who clearly has that shot in his bag eschews the hard slice BH as an approach or even as an occasional attacking/passing shot from the baseline. He utilizes the slice as a defensive shot and sometimes utilizes the short cross court semi-offensively and as a tactic to get baseliners off the baseline - but he rarely if ever approaches with the BH slice or if and when he does it's hit too safely and not as an aggressive penetrating shot. Everyone seems to feel they have to come in on a big heavy topspin shot - usually a FH (except Gasquet) - often hit inside out - which bounces up and leaves lots of open court if it's not a clean winner or close to it. Anyway I'd like to see Edberg influence Fed to mix things up a bit and incorporate some hard, aggressive slice/sidespin shots to change things up from the baseline and as approach shots. I think Fed would benefit from Djoker and especially Nadal having to deal with some hard and low skidding slice/sidespin approach shots and have to 'hit up' to Fed as he's coming in to net. The only current player that I've seen utilize this tactic to some effect is Tommy Haas. He was a set and a break up against Djokavic last yr (2013) in the BNP Paribas open utilizing this technique (mixing in a lot of variety and closing out pts at net) when he got tight (as he often does) and he went back to trying to slug it out from the baseline with the Djoker and - of course - lost in 3 sets.

Wow good coach and instructor! Too many American instructors don't focus enough on slice. They emphasize regular topspin groundstrokes and you see a lot of players lose so many points because they can't use slice to change it up or play defense.
