Amazing what they have done with such a tiny lens, thanks for the great review. And a Sirui lens without huge blue flares, nice to see! To my eye it lacks anamorphic character though, separation in particular. Distorted bokeh too, though maybe in scenes with more depth it’s there? It still looks great, just not particularly anamorphic to me. Still, given the size and weight, Sirui show they keep pushing the boundaries. Good on ‘em. Thanks again Joe 👍

Appreciate the review! This lens is a hard pass. It looks like a spherical/regular lens with a cheap anamorphic adapter on it. Kinda doesn't carry the characteristics over and is too neutral for my taste. Glad to see you uploading though and can't wait for the BTS diary series on the short you're working on!

Anamorphic character is both the flares, oval bokeh and the outward barrel distortion. Unfortunately shooting on a super 35 crops in on that last major characteristic. I would really love to see how this lens looks on full frame as it was intended. But unfortunately from what i can gather it actually looks like the lens has slight pin cushion distortion which is the opposite of that classic 3d anamorphic look where the images pop out from the screen.
@joenicklo

I should’ve shot some stuff on the R5. Just didn’t have the time. I’d say that at this price there will be some compromises. People can’t expect ideal anamorphic characteristics at this price.

I just bought the 50mm saturn. What aperture should i shoot at for the best cinema look/ bokeh? (Kind of a newbie) what number should i line it up to ?
@joenicklo
7 ай бұрын
Worry less about exactly what number to line it up to and focus on what you see on screen. Iris (T-Stop/F-Stop) is a creative choice. What you feel about the image is more important than the specific setting. With that said, I found that the sweet spot on this lens was in the T2.9-T4 range. Remember though, focus on what you see on your monitor and less about the settings.

why did you only show us white light flaring? The lens has natural flaring which means it's suppose to yield what ever color the light source is. Would have been great to show other color flares to see how muted or unmuted it is. Or does it only yield white flares?

Wouldn’t that depend on the color of the light itself? You can see on the iPhone test that there is some color in the flare.
