Functions a whole lot better and that is what I was going for. The addition of it looking better and being shorter are just extra benefits.

Just got the new M18 compact drill at a can't-refuse discount. I really like the mix of small size and amoke power, and the improved ergonomics compared to my last-gen M13 Fuel hammer drill. Hope the chuck isn't an issue, nice fix btw. I will use the M18 with my M12 tools for smaller jobs, as I run 90% Metabo HPT and Dewalt at 18v and up. I'll probably get the new HPT compact 18v drill, too, but will wait until the price is too low to say no.

The chuck doesn’t have an issue holding onto bits in my experience it’s just slippery and hard to tighten properly. I understand it’s largely my personal preference but for me it’s the black eye on an otherwise brilliant drill. So for me it seems like a no brainer.

The big thing for me is it just really doesn’t have much grip on the chuck. Especially compared to some of the better chucks on the market. So making this switch significantly improved one of the major touch points on the tools for me.

@@TinkerWithTools I almost always wear gloves with a good grip when I'm using power tools, so I don't think it would bother me. I do see your point, though. I'm honestly hoping Ridgid releases a subcompact drill with a metal chuck in the near future. I heard that the gen 1 was released in 2020 and the gen 2 was released in 2022, so there's a chance that a gen 3 could be released within the next year. By the way, what chuck did you swap it with? You probably voided the warranty, but the upgrade might be worth it to some people,
@TinkerWithTools
4 ай бұрын
Oh I definitely voided the warranty on both tools. I took the M12 Gen 3 Fuel drill and stole that chuck. The reason why is that I tried an after market chuck but it had different size threading that was bigger than the Milwaukee drills. So then I looked at an aftermarket Milwaukee authentic chuck and it was the same price as a new M12 Fuel drill. So the choice kind of made itself at that point. I sacrificed the old one and bought a new drill to go along side it.

@TinkerWithTools isnt the m12 on the right a hammer drill though?

It is the hammer drill but both the hammer drill and the drill driver in the M12 list their length at 5.9”. I don’t have the drill driver version but based on what I can see they are the same.

Is the new chuck from an m18 or m12 drill? Also do you think it’s possible to put a quick change collet on the new compact impact?
@TinkerWithTools
4 ай бұрын
The chuck is from a gen 3 M12 fuel hammer drill. As for the quick change collet, I honestly haven’t ever considered it or even looked into it. If it’s possible though there are a number of impacts I would like to swap. I think you just sent me down a rabbit hole of research.

@@TinkerWithToolsi tried that myself on my metabo I don't know what designation it had,it had 1,240inlbs torque. Anyways no go, you have to alter the inside of the 1/4in. hex drive, the collets themselves don't have anything to do with whether it's a quick change or not. I got pretty good at fixing collets (shout out to Milwaukee for thier gen2,gen3 fuel and thier hydraulic 18volt impact drivers) of course I won't claim I've worked on every brand, I can really only speak on metabo,Milwaukee,dewalt craftsman and Bosch.

Don't mean to hold you hostage over the issue just wanted to add I by no means am an expert I could be wrong but I did not see a way to convert to a quick change thru any of those brands collets, the only things you can actually attempt without machine equipment would be to add or subtract the lil ball bearings or somehow manipulate the different springs and or the thin round metal pieces that hold the springs in place. I tried variations of all the above which led me to my conclusion that it nothing to do with the colllets. Lastly all the brands collets whether quick change or not were Pretty much made the same way only difference being one or two had maybe one less spring etc.
@codyhoward6509

@@joshwittmer5042 if the collet is the same why couldn’t you just add the pieces from let’s say the gen 4 m18 fuel impact? Not quite understanding what the problem would be?
@TinkerWithTools
4 ай бұрын
I think you would have to likely swap the whole collet assembly for the tool and I am not sure how interchangeable they are between brands. So if I tear down an older gen fuel impact driver (like the M12 gen 2 for example) will it swap over? Not sure. It’s certainly beyond anything I have tried. But I know that man caver tools and others have swapped collets for anvils with some success (and sometimes modifications) so there has to be a way.

Metal chuck all day everyday. If you're on the trades, you would know its better in terms of durability, vibration if its a hammer drill, and feels better when in use.
