These cars are amazing. Their cell crash structure makes them one of the safest cars on the road. Don’t let the naysayers tell you otherwise. I’ve got a buddy who slapped a Mazdaspeed3 Turbo on a Manual ‘16 model with some grippy tires, upgraded swaybar endlinks and some coilovers and he has no problem lapping much faster/bigger cars on the track, and not to mention knocks out 60MPH in around 6 seconds. These cars got really really good at the end of their life, which is why it’s so sad to see the stigma attached to them. I should add that I’m a Z/911 guy (I actually messaged you on Instagram offering to let you drive my Z32 TT), and I absolutely adore these.
@bubbleman2002

@@39PSIOnTheDaily A rigid chassis can kill. The car has no hood to have a crumple zone. Crumple zones dampen deceleration forces in the event of an accident. If there isn't anything to crumple, there can't be a crumple zone. I am sure the car retains its shape in an accident, but could the same be said for the driver or their insides if they go from 40 miles per hour to 0 in less than a quarter of a second? Then again, the car's very light weight allows it to stop quickly, reducing the impact speed, somewhat reducing the need for crumple zones.

My daily driver is a 2017 Fortwo Cabriolet - absolutely love it. I've owned Smarts since 2008, and they're one of my favorite cars ever. The 2017 and later 453 models (like this one in your video) are a whole different car than the earlier models. Super fun! :)

from what i understand about smart cars, its called smart because of how rigid they are, they are basically a roll cage on wheels. i believe there's a test video of one crashing at like 70 mph and the car didnt even budge practically, so safety wise, i think you're fine. also i laughed when you said its like a s class kei car, because well smart is owned by Mercedes

Even in pouring down rain it takes tight 20 mph curves fast, and doesn't feel like it wants to flip. Back in 1974, I put Tomaselli clip ons on the fork tubes of my 1974 Kawasaki 90 gessd. So, now you know how I go in turns.

Because of it's 'tridion cell' with stacked layers of hard steel (I think there are up to 7 layers or so) it should be pretty safe. There is a video by Mercedes where they did a head-on crash with an S-Class. But after a crash, unlike other cars, you can't really repair this ultra complex crash structure that gets destroyed already at speeds where other cars would only use their crumple zone.
@TedwardDrives
3 жыл бұрын
Because no crumple zone the car may survive but not sure what happens to your brain after Impact with almost no impulse. That’s a lot of force to absorb almost instantly

@@TedwardDrives I know someone who had a crash in his first gen fortwo. He got rear ended by a Golf. He was almost stationary while the Golf hit him at 70 km/h (around 40 to 45 mph) and he got out with almost nothing at all (I think his neck was hurting, but nothing serious). But he was lucky that there was no passenger, the battery shot out of the engine bay right to the passenger's seat and hit the dashboard. If that thing got launched onto a head, that would have caused some serious injuries.
@stevenlawrie7819
3 жыл бұрын
Strange you say about the battery as it's in the front. The seats are reinforced. The steel safety cage (Tridion cell) is designed to use the crumple zones of the other car.
@tobias_k01
3 жыл бұрын
@@stevenlawrie7819 wait, you are right! Then it must have been some other engine component, I don't know. I mean, it happened a few years ago and I only know it because my father told me the story when it happened (it was someone from work), so some information may have been mixed over time and people, but I know that a) it was on a main road and he got hit at about that speed, but was not injured and b) there was something that got launched into the passenger's area.

When I raced Motocross, 125cc two strokes wee my absolute favorite; when I roadraced, small lightweight two strokes were always the best...or V-Twins like my beloved SV650 track bike....600cc sport bikes were pigs to me. And the same with cars, love my FRS👍. I can just imagine how cool this car would be with a GSXR1000 engine and gear box in it😍😍😍😍

I’m pushing for a 6.2L Merc SL as my next car but I had one of these and I always tell people that even the G-wagon isn’t as gangster as the MK2 Smart ForTwo. If it’s not a parking space IT’S A PARKING SPACE. And the handling is soooo lively through twisty English countryside B roads! It will scare you, it will teach you, it will steal your heart and put hair on your chest if you dare to drive it hard.

its a torquey 900ccm turbo inline 3, weighing about 1800 pounds. the DCT or the manual both work amazingly, its rear wheel drive, super short wheelbase, very direct steering, etc. And at this point, you definitly do notice that the interior is inspired by Mercedes. Honestly, the Fortwo and actually the forfour are amazingly fun town-cars with decent highway usability, as long as you dont feel the need to go over 75mph for long periods of time, the forfour especially and so on. Big cars are nice and all but if you want something fun, affordable, good daily and so on, go for small.

If you're living in Germany, you can test drive the Smart car with share now. It's a car sharing company, just create an account and search one on your smartphone, on your next trip to a city like Berlin, Köln, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, München etc. The price is something like 30 cents per minute. You have not pay nothing else (no insurance, no gasoline, no parking). It's amazing.
