What I’ve done for a while is follow a cycle and stick to it, this is that cycle: buy the latest iPhone use it til it brakes or doesn’t get any software upgrades and then buy the latest iPhone, right now I have the iPhone 6 and I’ve never had an iPhone for this long (almost 5 years), I think that’s a pretty great way of doing but I dunno. Unless I find a great deal on a newer phone I’m not going to change this baby until it’s lasts breath

A found a phone receipt yesterday for a Sony Ericsson P800, from around 2003. Remember those babies, one of the first with a stylus? Pricetag was just under 6000 NOK, or 708 USD. For that mindblowing pricetag you got 208 x 320 pix resolution, 16 mb of internal memory and no video recording. It rocked WAP and the Symbian OS. And it was fricking awesome!

Sure its not the best phone in the world, but compared too most of the slow phones I had been using with a Snapdragon 210/410 or equivalents I had, it was a MAJOR upgrade. I bought a 6000mha battery for it, rooted it & installed Lineage OS 14.1 on it, & then installed a 256GB MicroSD. With all the upgrades I've made, I feel I won't have too upgrade for at least 4 years.

I've had nothing but issues from buyers on Swappa. I used to sell refurbished used devices and apparently the buyers do not either understand what that means or choose not to read the description. Then they leave you negative feedback and it's just a mess. Find a buddy who loves last year devices, you get the new one & your buddy buys the old one. Shake & Bake.
@dpcdpc11

I think it depends on how long you plan to use the phone. If you go for the long run like 4-5 years, then I would recommend a new phone or a used one with easy battery replacement because the battery will be the first to degrade. I'm still using a Note 4 with a 3rd battery replacement which works even better than the original one. And with LineageOS 16 everything works nice and smooth. I'm still looking for a good reason to replace this phone but can't find a compelling one, for my usage at least :)

Yeah $10 for an S7 is not worth it, I can see that its better than letting it sit around rather than having $10 but there's so much more you can do with the phone that isn't just getting rid of it. You can keep for 2FA for some websites, use it for some kind of storage or back up, give it to someone who could use it. Basically giving it to Gazelle isn't the best option since they're really just profiting off of it. Hell you could put it up on craigslist for way more, and the person would probably get that phone for cheaper than whatever Gazelle sells it for and you're up a few bucks as well!

One additional thing to think about is deals on new phones. If you can wait until black friday or even the month of November, many times Best Buy or Costco or even Target will have the new phones on sale cheaper. There was a $300/$350 off a new Samsung phone at Best Buy last year. A brand new S8+ at Best Buy Black Friday last year was approximately $516. A good thing about Best Buy is that you don't have to get 24 monthly credits to get the "$300" off, you can pay for all but a few dollars of the phone and pay off the installments when you get the bill.

I tried selling my IPhone 7 on Swappa. I listed its condition appropriately at fair, mentioned a few small screen scuffs in the listing, included photos, and priced it accordingly. Sure enough, after shipping it across the country, the buyer was unhappy with the screen quality of their (strangely bargain priced) Iphone. It was an absolute nightmare to untangle between the buyer, Paypal, and Swappa, resulting in a lot of anxiety and me losing the cost of insured shipping. Swappa may be great for buying phones, but unless yours is pristine, I recommend good ol CL for selling.

LifezLife eBay isn’t super reliable, if you’re not buying from a large user.

My mom got her Samsung Galaxy S7 for like 4 years now without factory reseting since day 1 and feels like you bought it yesterday. And i have my Blackberry Bold 9780 for 5 years now.

If your buying something person to person, meet at a bank. It’s safe and if they “didn’t bring enough money”, the ATM is close by.

For $10 I rather keep my old phone and use it as a media device. Fill it with music and audiobooks, and take it with me when I want to be offline but still have media like at the gym or out eating lunch. Or just keep it around the house and have another wifi device. Or above all else, if my new phone gets destroyed, and I need a replacement while I get a new one or if I can't afford another.

You could but the Note 8 right now for around $350.00 on the used market. Wait for 6-8 more months and then buy the s9 plus for around $400.00 and continue on that routine.

Hmm … I’m using my boyfriend’s old smartphone. It’s free and it works. I guess it’s kind of similar to what’s being talked about, except without me buying anything.

Bought my 7+ on eBay 6 months after Apple released it. 256gb phone cheaper than the retail baseline model. Looked at the sellers reviews and asked a few questions to verify it wasn't a scam. The dude "forgot" to ship 9 days after I had made the payment so that was a nervous time but thankfully the device arrived as described and continues to work great!. Not a fool proof method but I always advise the refurbish method to all tech literate friends and colleagues.

I would’ve sold the S7 on ebay or OfferUp rather than recycling it. no matter how broken the phone is someone can use the parts and pay a lot more than what those websites or ecoatm’s will give you

I'm so glad Swappa got a shootout. That's my favorite place to buy phones as eBay is becoming hard to filter with the increasing sellers with stock photos.

I purchased an $800 MSRP phone for $200. I chose a USED phone that was 3 years old in mint condition on Ebay. USED is cheaper than NEW. "Mint" can be subjective - depending on seller honesty, so I bought a 2 year warranty for $40 (20%). 3 year old phone usually means it is almost fully depreciated. If anything goes wrong in 2 years, I recover my $200. If it breaks in year 2, cost of ownership is $20/year. If it breaks immediately, loss is $40. I look at # of reviews, and ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ranking.

i've bought used phones .. i wouldn't recommend. Mainly because you don't know how heavy the phone has been used before you've had it. They clean it up it looks great, but some people are heavy phone users, and i've noticed after 1-2 years the battery shuts down considerably, and over heated battery rears it's head. It begins to have glitches from updates, one day the phone wouldn't turn on (happened to 2 used phones i've had) and wasn't worth it to put any more money into it. I've recently bought a brand new phone from the manufacturer, couldn't be happier
