I saw The Smile! I was on the floor and it was honestly so good, I had a blast! Thank you to everyone who helped get me there! They played everything from ALFAA and like 5-6 new tracks which I'm digging.

Met you briefly before the Monday show. I was BLOWN away by the gig - seeing them bring the music to life was incredible. I meant to mention to you to do an analysis of the empire of light soundtrack from Trent Reznor. But I’m back here to hear The Smile analysis😊

I saw them at a festival last year and it was one of the best days of my life. I believe I spent 2 hours waiting in line, so I could stand right by the stage. It really payed off, cause I ended up standing 4 meters from Thom at the front line of the crowd. Pure bliss

You're helping me cope with a job that is slowly killing me. Thank you for breathing new life into mine. I sometimes don't want to dispel the magic of these pieces and performances, but this doesn't dispel them, rather it deepens them and enhances the magic. And it is strong magic, so that is saying a lot.

Your explanation of how the polyrhythm hits you is what I’ve felt for years and couldn’t explain. And of course I’m just learning the term “polyrhythm” 😂

A little note on The Opposite. The entire riff is being played by Jonny. There's no trade off to make the notes overlap. Thom has a sparse bass line but that overlap spot where the riff starts over before the last few notes are done, that's because of the delay. The last few notes are coming from the delay.. they're notes Jonny already played which the delay is repeating but the delay is so long that those notes overlap with the beginning of the riff. It's very cool. Jonny is a magician
@RyanRenteria

yep. the delay repeats once evey 5 16th notes. jonny is just playing on the first 3 8th notes of every bar
@RyanRenteria

on "the opposite" the riff isnt being passed off by the bass and guitar. the guitar has a delay on it set to repeat once every 5 16th notes. so Jonny is literally only playing 3 8th notes: | E E F#...| D D E...| E E F#...| B D C...| The delay fills in the syncopated notes

Your immediate summary of the close/distant mix of "The Smoke" as "like a false sense of intimacy" is brilliant. Most insightful music channel.

the intro to pana-vision is in A octatonic aka half/whole diminished scale: A Bb C C# Eb E F# G A. it's Messiaen's second mode of limited transposition. its jonny's favorite scale, so it probably wasnt thom just making it up, as the melody follows the scale perfectly.

I feel the whole album plays with rhythmic displacement (or whatever the correct music theory name for it). 5/4s, 7/8s, twos over threes, drum fills that don't emphasize the one... it's kinda like Weird Fishes' guitars expanded to a whole album.

It was the first breath of fresh air after that first wave. They did 2 nights of live broadcasts- some small, in the round …3 shows in total, black and white- London Jan or Feb of 2022. It was so good. Hope you got to see them. I finally saw them on the Moon Shape Pool in 2017. Like trying to pick children-I hear it as a record, as with all of them. They are always messing with my mind and I love it.

Stumbled across your live stream while looking for more information on The Smile. Thank you SO MUCH for this video and the analysis. Let me be the first to say it, A Light For Attracting Attention is the modern day Sgt. Peppers album. A modern blend of different musical genres, unpredictable time signatures, ethereal moods, all scary and beautiful at the very same time. I saw the Smile last week in Cleveland and I am driving 11 hours each way to St. Louis to see them again on 7/19. Thank you so much.

"You Will Never Work in Television Again" is one of those great Yorke titles. His wife is an actress -- let's assume she has encountered skeevy industry men like the troll described. That man would threaten her with "you will never..." but in a loving, protective way, Yorke is promising her she will never have to work in television again. "Get your dirty hands off my love." The line "heaven knows where else you've been" is also a dpuble entendre: It's a rhetorical cliche but also a threat about cosmic justice.

The Open the Floodgates (live at Magazine Jan 2022) is perfection. Take a look if you get chance. I noticed the “starting the song with the end of the chord progression” for the first time when I saw that live version. Thom’s voice is flawless too. Great channel, and being a NIN and Radiohead / Thom Yorke fan, I can’t go wrong here 😊

not quite. the opening riff is in 4/4 on all instruments, but then they mutate it. the drums stay in 4/4 for the entire song, but the bass and guitar change. the basic cycle is : |: 4/4 x4, 7/8 x2, 3/4, 4/4, 7/8 x2, 3/4 :| Then on the bridge/chorus, the bass plays in 4/4 while thom sings in 5/8 along with jonny's 5/8 guitar part
