When your audience is subdividing so hard they clap on the second 16th note

if someone is wondering why is someone clapping out of tempo, someone in reddit said this: "Also my brother started a clap in the audience on the wrong beats during The Same to confuse the band, he told that to Thom after the show and Thom said "you bastard, say sorry to Jonny he was really confused" that was definitely a legendary encounter"

Tonight I've been to the concert in Prague, two days after the one in the video, and Tom Skinner started clapping on the "right" beat before anyone in the public could take any initiative 😂 Thom seemed to appreciate the idea

In those days here in Rochester Michigan there was a record store called " East Ally records" they would open the store at midnight for certain album releases and that was one of them... I remember there were 43 other people buying kid a at midnight and we all listed to it start to finish and nobody talked till it was done playing. That's a memory I will always have with me

So very thankful they included the bass drum pulse on the one - otherwise I never would’ve caught that crazy meter the keys playing on the offbeat like that creates. *edit* lol the crowd apparently did not catch the meter, they’re clapping with the keys. Not the pulsing one beat lol. Thom’s left foot is tapping along to the bass drum on the one, if you’re confused. If we’re counting 1&2&3&4& they’re clapping on the &, not the 1 and 3.😂

The keys are playing on all the 16th note upbeats: 1 *E* n *A* 2 *E* n *A* 3 *E* n *A* 4 *E* n *A*. The kick drum is playing straight quarter notes 1 2 3 4. The crowd started clapping one 16th note off from the kick, on the *E*. 1 *E* n a 2 *E* n a.

@@BraeburnTV well said. Thom does stuff like this a lot, and often times my brain defaults to the beat the crowd was clapping along too, but they didn’t get me this time! Usually they don’t leave in a pulsing bass drum as a guide, I was grateful they did on this. Honestly starting the song at the beginning still gives me trouble. I often have to start it about :28 seconds in to where the bass drum comes in to catch it.

Yes!!!! I was thinking I was the only one who noticed they didn’t realize the pulsing bass drum hits are the one. It threw me for a loop at first too, but I wasn’t gonna let them “videotape” me again. They’re clapping on the offbeat of the one and the three lol.

@@camilogonzalez7451 holy crap!!!!! That’s hilarious! Honestly it would’ve thrown me off, and I’ve listened to that song ALOT to get the meter set in my mind. I listened to Videotape incorrectly for 15 years, so even though I know the meter, and how to play it, when I hear those piano strikes my brain defaults to the one😂🤦🏻♂️

The bass synth creates the main beat and people just clap to it because it starts first and it is more obvious than the syncopated bass drum that comes in later
@BraeburnTV

Possible, but knowing these guys, they like to start a song with an ambiguous tempo and meter, only for it to make sense as the song unfolds. “Pyramid Song”, “Video Tape” “The Gloaming” etc. So with this tune, I think all the bass synths are on the up beats of the 16th notes: 1 *E n *A 2 *E n *A. With the kick drum coming in on the quarter note down beats. But yeah, the first thing you hear is those bass synths, so everyone instinctively orients the 1 with those, only to be surprised later.

Ummmm I doubt it. Not even the crowd got the time meter on that one right. Clapping was totally not in time with the song. They’re clapping on the off beat of one and three. The one is the pulsing bass drum hit Thom is tapping his foot to. Like videotape, but more evil. So glad evil mathy distorted Radiohead is back. It’s been a really really long time. Thin Thing is such a triumph. I think the last time they changed time signatures in a song was ……. 2+2=5. Been awhile. Thin Thing, The Opposite, YWNWITA, Skrting On The Surface, and Free In The Knowledge … really the whole album, is exactly where I was hoping they’d go after Kid A. It was worth the 20 year wait.
