Having been a Smiths and Morrissey fan for 30 years now, I've known a lot of fans of theirs who had things like depression or bipolar disorder, but were lifted out of those feelings at least in part by these songs. It's like hearing a song for the first time and saying, "Yes! That guy knows exactly how I feel!". Also, since the early days of the Smiths, fans have been throwing flowers onstage during the concerts, and Morrissey dances with the flowers in hand. Morrissey fans also have a tendency to climb up on stage to get a chance to hug him, and he allows them to. Morrissey is also a longtime vegan and animal rights activist. The music of Smiths and Morrissey appeals to the outsiders, the ignored, the lonely, the depressed, the LGBT community, the celibate, the awkward, and the black sheep. The fact that people have been climbing up on stage to hug him for 35 years speaks to the fact that the songs are written for those who are deprived of love and acceptance. And to paraphrase a Smiths song, "Ask me, I won't say no, how could I?".

The Smiths are one of the best bands of all time. The blend of Morrissey's heavy deep cynical and at times brilliantly funny lyrics with Johnny Marr's beautiful music is one of life's biggest and most exquisite joys! Morrissey really is up there with Oscar Wilde as one of my all time favourite writers.

@SilentAssassin01234

I don't think that's what it's about. I think it is literally just about a confused (and out of place) boy who punctures his bike on hill who is greeted by a guy who pulls up in a car and offers him a ride. The guy then asks him to go out dancing/drinking that night but the boy is either too poor or too insecure to go. However 'why pamper life's complexities', he wants to be adventurous. The bit about the ring though I have no idea.
@SilentAssassin01234

@SilentAssassin01234
4 жыл бұрын
@David Clinging Well no-one knows for sure. I was referring to Morrissey's quote about not having enough money or clothes to go out. Which is really what the song is about, not sexuality like other people say. For the hillside bit, that is your interpretation, I never have that image appear in my mind when hearing this song but if you do then good for you.
@SilentAssassin01234
4 жыл бұрын
@David Clinging I see that line more about Morrissey (or whoever the protagonist is) allowing himself to hitch a ride from this stranger. Why question if nature will make a man of him yet so he can fend for himself when it's clear he doesn't have to do everything alone. I think the line literally means why ponder about life and desolation when I could just get it in this car and have live. The leather runs smooth - a well kept upper class car - extremely welcoming to a boy in poverty so why not get in?

I don't know how anyone can perceive any of the Smiths' lyrics as being depressing. They are laugh out loud hilarious. I think that a lot of people confuse "depressing" with "real". Considering Morrissey's influences of kitchen sink dramas and a desperation to escape working class life, his lyrics are such an accurate portrayal of the life of a working class loner who is unlucky in love. The whole catalogue of Smiths songs is just one long episode of Coronation Street, and they are just perfect!

I discovered The Smiths in my adulthood, at a time where I'm in a very happy relationship, have a good job and generally things are going well. Had I discovered them in my teenage years I'd probably find those lyrics very very depressing. Also has to do with background, probably anyone who isn't from Britain or very accustomed to British culture and lifestyle won't even recognise the notion of kitchen sink dramas

The original lyrics of "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" paint a more clear picture of the meaning of the song. The record label wouldn't have it in the 80s, the working title was "Let Me Have Who I Want"

For Morrissey, that's quite jolly and upbeat from the joy sapping songster.
