A couple of weeks ago, as I was trying to find the right piece for this channel. I looked out my studio window and saw that a light snow had begun to fall. Immediately I remembered back to my early piano lessons when I first discovered “The snow is dancing” from Claude Debussy’s Children’s Corner suite. At that time, I learned five of the six pieces from the set, all but “The snow is dancing.” The little movement was too difficult for me at the time. Fast forward to this snowy January day in 2023 when I thought, why not now? (P.S. my parents thought the $5.00 cost of the Children’s Corner score was outrageous!)
"The snow is dancing” is a marvelous miniature piano work that features the musical version of what we think of impressionism in art, particularly in the use of pointillism. On a trip to France several years ago, we visited the Louvre Museum in Paris where we saw many of the most famous French impressionist paintings from the late 19th/early 20th century. When we got close to the paintings, it was amazing to see how intricate the detail of paintings were. Debussy uses a similar approach in music.
Debussy was one of the early impressionist composers and his Children’s Corner is a wonderful example of this style. It’s a charming piece of French music from the turn of the century.
