@David Sharma I could go either way on this. First of all, I really don't think actors have a difficult life and I believe that most of them are well compensated for what they do once they reach this level (what percentage of aspiring actors even make it to this level?). However, impersonating a character while remembering lines by yourself is a pretty naive comparison to what they do. YOU may think you're doing a good job, but are you really? It's entirely up to the director. Some shoots can last for 16 hours. Some scenes have to be re-shot because the certain delivery on a sentence didn't satisfy what the director was looking for. The fact that Steve Van Zandt was able to perform this well on his first acting gig is a rarity. For all I know, that could be you as well. I certainly wish it was me!

Silvio was 100% right,Tony does have a problem with authority,case in point when Tony was stopped in his car with Carm for speeding,and instead of just accepting the ticket,ready to put the whole situation behind him,he responded to the officer with insolence because he doesn't like authority or being obedient.But what really bothers me is that Silvio was Tony's only true friend,made evident through Tony's Nightmares where many a time when Tony would be feeling like shit,Silvio would appear in the Nightmare and then Tony would feel better and of course there was the most the decisive proof of Silvio's friendship when Tony was shot,putting him on life support-all of Tony's Captains weren't concerned about Tony pulling through,they were all psyched considering the financial gains for themselves if Tony was to die,not Silvio though,who would of prospered the most out of Tony's demise.Even when pressed by his wife to assume Tony's role,Silvio was having none of it and was just upset about the prospect of his friend dying,so for Tony to respond to Silvio's genuinely concerned advice by being defensive and getting up in Silvio's face as if he were one of his common mooks really fuckin upsets me-seriously,how many Consiglieres actually love and respect their Capo?...Just 1-Silvio Dante.

@gregarioussorrow
10 жыл бұрын
king78802 To properly answer that question it's necessary for me to clarify what the word "Psychopath" actually means since,like so many other Terms portrayed in various media,it has been over-simplified,like the Term "Libido" which has been over-simplified so much over the years that it now means "sex-drive" when in fact it originally meant "Life Energy";the inborn fuel that drives all people."Psychopath",generally gives people connotations of axe murderers and madness,when in fact the word actually refers to a "Personality Factor"-a prime,overarching aspect of someone's behaviour,for example Russel Crowe has "anger" as a personality factor and Shia Leboef probably has "petulance" as a personality factor of his.Psychopath,is a noun derived from the personality factor that is "Psychopathy"-a personality factor that is characterised by an enthusiasm or tendency towards Brutality(savage violence) and an indifference towards the suffering that said Brutality inflicts on another.Now if You contemplate about The Sopranos you'll realise that not only did nearly every Wiseguy and Mook in the show have it,or some level of it,but that Tony B had it alot,which probably contributed to him being quite introverted and unscrupulous.

Agree with everything, well said, but for one thing ("All due respect")--Silvio wanted no part of wearing the crown. Didn't he get all anxious, queasy or whatever, some scene with his wife? That's why Tony goes for that weak spot, he know his friend well, since a kid just the same as Sil knows him, and because Tony DOES suffer this pride, authority thing, and HATES being challenged as to HIS authority, etc...he tries to hurt Sil a little here, i.e. YOU wouldn't know how you are all alone, caus YOU don't have the balls, etc, to be King. Which IS pathetic, true or not, to say to him, as Sil IS his right hand and friend. But that's Tony--same as when trying to get Chris to drink, or rattle Janice's pans, regarding Harpo her son at dinner, since she and Chris were doing BETTER than him...exhibiting some sort of self control, etc....semi happiness.

He's a joyless man who hates his job and bares his teeth at everybody, even his allies, because he's too stupid and confused to figure out who his enemies even are. Vito Corleone would have been aghast at what a fuck-up of a "boss" Tony was if he'd ever met him. He's got tons of violence but no capacity for love, great at producing fear but incapable of making even his own family respect him, and he makes piles of money without any honor about how he does it. Thanks. They spent most of the first season accentuating how Tony was the "wrong boss, at the wrong time, at the wrong place", and his sudden nervous spells are simply his subconscious reminding him of the fact that he's not a good boss. Then the series got super popular and nobody liked what a whiner he was, so they banished his conscience altogether and made him a born psychopath. That's a lazy crock of bullshit because psychopaths are nothing like Tony; he's a garden-variety sociopath who's also slightly smarter than the average gang Soldier, whether that gang is made of Sicilians or blacks or Hispanics. He's "the glorified Capo of a glorified Crew", and he's doing it during the last gasp of Cosa Nostra's ability to project power in the NYC Metro area, their own birthplace. Worst part is that nobody really cares, because there's no honor or nobility in being in Cosa Nostra anymore. It's the same shit as the Russian gangs or the black gangs or a pack of jackals in the woods, purely about money and nobody will miss you or care when you're in prison. Just a conveyor belt to Hell for people with shitty abusive parents, low social skills and an inability to live a straight life without murdering or stealing from anybody. Aka, garden-variety sociopaths.

When he kills Chris he even sounds like her when he's justifying it as Chris being better off and his family being better off without him. This is exactly what Olivia said when she and Jr. talked about killing Tony. Tony was Olivia with a penis. Though I don't think he was as intelligent as she was.

'I'm sorry you feel that way' sad moment, Sil's more upset that Tony feels he can't confide in him despite being friends since childhood but at the same time he gets it, none of these guys want to look weak. Tony doesn't want to look weak, so he deals with all the shit in his head alone. That's one of the tragic parts of the series, these friends all drift further away from each other - it becomes about business because you can't have friends in the mob.

There's something about the way Silvio says "I've known you since you were a kid, Tone." Silvio knows that as much as he could offend Tony with a comment, Tony will always remember that Silvio always was and always will be his ride or die best friend. The true definition of "the brother you choose."

Tony Soprano-Always right, and everybody else is wrong. At least, that's the way he thinks. He really should've learned that he was wrong, from time to time. Silvio was right to call him out. Tony definitely chafed under Silvio's rebuke, but Silvio wouldn't back down, to which I say, more power to him! Tony watched his own empire crumble out from under him, all because of pride. He even attacked Paulie at one point, then apologized for it. Soon after, Puss, then Jimmy Altieri, were dealt with. Even Chrissie ended up dead at Tony's hand! This guy, Tony, killed Chrissie, his own nephew! You have to be extremely low to do something like that! In the end, only Tony and Paulie were left...and then, after Tony got whacked at a Restaurant, it was only Paulie. Paulie must've felt so lost, after seeing all of those people that he associated with, dead. And only Paulie survived.
@robertbryant3252

Yeah, and the show illustrates that very well with the Carmine Sr.-Johnny Sac relationship. In any other mafia story, the consigliere would team up with the capos and find a new successor behind Tony's back. Tony was so focused on portraying himself as the "Captain of Industry-type" that it went to his head. I mean hell, even from the flashbacks from 1995, 3 years before the story starts, Tony seems to be much more level-headed. If he was kept as a capo, he would have easily lived into old age as a successful mafioso. Something tells me if Johnny Soprano had ever became the Boss, their fate would've been similar, except 25-30 years earlier.

I always thought Silvio was the smartest guy on the whole Soprano crew. You notice he never flies off the handle, he always keeps a level head. Not to say he wasn't a violent sociopath like the rest of them, he was just far more chill and calculating IMO. Also I think he relished his role as #2, it kept a lot of stress off him, it kept the feds off him, it made him a less likely target of assassination.

Tony's intense response to Sil shows that Sil reached him at an intimate level; Tony pours out the loneliness, and about the complexity and absolute buck-stops responsibility of his role. Sil got close to Tony's private pain in a way that others in the business probably never could. The pride that make Tony great is also a barrier, as Sil could see and dared to feed back to Tony. Sil said his part, and what Tony did with it was up to him... and this makes Sil's parting line all the more poignant. Tony knew he was right, despite emotionally dumping in Sil.

It just dawned on me that Silvio truly had the answer to solve everything that would have prevented Phil, himself, and Tony from being killed. He lays it out for Tony right here and it required for him to break away from his default loyalty to Tony, but It is ultimately Tony’s pride and lack of authority that ends his life in the end

What a great character Silvio was - sometimes leaders need to be told uncomfortable truths and ponder over what they have been told. Silvio had the balls to do this to Tony. He was telling him because he needed to know the truth and gravity of the situation for his own good. Tony did have a point that Silvio didn't know what it was like being number one, but Silvio, more than anyone had a pretty damn good idea.
