I see some people slightly misinterpreted this scene. Tony actually HATES Paulie by the point. When he sees him laughing, he sees an old, easily distracted and entertained fool-like an old man laughing loudly at something juvenile by modern standards. Paulie has taken on the quality of innocence associated with the mental state of older people. All at once Tony already knows he talked to NY, that he acts very childish, and that he can’t be trusted. But the part that bothers him most? It’s not enough to kill him or make him overcome his memory of him. It’s essentially a painful disillusionment. He sees who Paulie really is. And it’s not the strong man he thought of as a kid. It’s a weak and scared boy. Tony feels more alone by one. He feels like he knows and bears too much as one man. Sees and hears… too much. This is the entire premise of the show. His mental state is trapped between two worlds.

For anyone who thinks Sopranos isnt deep and is just a mobster trash (they exist) - this is what I love in this show, deep diving into our mentality, small details of arguing, lying, being nice, pretending, being obsessed, etc. This is the core of the show.

I always pause it and look at Tony's face just before it ends. To me , it's the kind of look someone gives when they see something specific, not his daughter but perhaps maybe someone behind her who stepped in right as she entered . Idk . I wish we were given an explanation. I hate trying to guess shit lol

Tony is not comparing himself to Paulie. At this point Tony is subconsciously angry and upset at every Surrogate father he had. He gambles In “chasing it” season 6 to say fuck you to his biological father. At this point him and Paulie had to take a trip away because of a body that was found that was Tony’s first murder. A murder in which Paulie ordered Tony to do to earn his stripes in the mafia. He talks to Tony about how proud his dad would’ve been knowing that he was able to do it without hesitation. Pretty much realizing that To live up to His dads expectations as a man he had to kill a guy. He’s watching Paulie sit at the end of the TV laughing like a little kid with no care in the world. Completely oblivious to the fact that in the next room over is a grown man who Paulie pretty much raised as a little boy and groomed him into the life of a murdering angry spiteful mafia Boss. Sure Tony has to take responsibility for his actions but it doesn’t change the fact that he was groomed by his dad Paulie Dickie and uncle June. Realizing he was groomed by sociopaths that can’t love in general. If they ever loved him why would the lead him into this life. Tony continues the cycle and does the same with Christopher. Christopher ends up subconsciously despising Tony hence the cleaver film. The first time Tony ever saw violence was his dad with a meat cleaver. I tried to explain this as best as possible but I found this on a website called “the chase lounge” thechaselounge.net/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=2503 Extremely Long read but the whole show about Tony’s mindset is written here. Including this scene. One of the best articles I’ve ever read online.

Tony goes out to his balcony to enjoy the beautiful ocean breeze, and then Paulie ruins it with his obnoxious laugh whilst watching TV alone in his room next door...if he were silently watching a war documentary or a film starring Gary Cooper, he'd have tonys respect..but no..it has to be slapstick comedy a la threes company...in a nutshell, tony sees that Paulie is an annoying simpleton....this scene is also a micro of the bigger picture where Tony had a beautiful thing going with funny mole jokes and hud/esplanade scams, all of which Paulie ruined with his big mouth by blabbing to Sac. this scene just gives Tony more motivational ammo to do what he is prepared to do the next day. The look we see on Tony's face is one of utter disdain and disgust.

I think people read into this WAY too much. I think it’s just good old Paulie being the easily entertained , albeit slightly irritating goofball he usually is, and Tony, who at this point in his character development has become so miserable, intolerant, narcissistic, and fat that he also hates seeing other people truly enjoying life like Paulie is here. This and a few other annoyances really do make him think about killing him. There’s almost nothing left of Tony at this point, he truly is despicable.

Everyone is talking about how miserable Tony is but this scene shows the dynamic between the two characters. Tony goes out, seemingly at peace, looking at the waves crashing. Paulie laughing like an idiot ruined his whole vibe. I would be mad too.

Despite Tony and Paulie 'going way back together', I think this scene shows Tony has just had enough of Paulie, but he can't whack him. Kind of like how Tony fell out with Hesh. Paulie actually caused so much damage for Tony, with him letting New York know about Ralphies joke, as well as the HUD scams etc. When Tony lost Ralph and Vito, he lost his best earners. Paulie and Carlo were average earners at best yet never seemed to stress.

It also shows Paulie being able to laugh his ass off naturally on his own terms. I may be wrong but usually Paulie does the he-he or he-he-he when with Tony or the crew. And maybe Tony sees not just a man happy at a daft tv show, but a man different to who he normally is.

In the midst of murder, mayhem and crisis, Paulie could always find moments where he could escape in order to laugh and enjoy the world. And even though he had everything in the world, everything a man could ever ask for, this was the one peace that Tony could never find... And, in true Tony Soprano jealousy and misery, he hated Paulie for it.
