The magician really did remind me of Peter Pan. He kept trying to make the female lead "believe." I think Ji Chang Wook did so well as this character, and did well with the ambiguity of his role. He was scary yet also loveable. I really enjoyed this review. The wine shots made me laugh!

Abracadabra move aside. Annarasumanara is here 🙂 I am a Musicals fan, so I very much enjoyed almost all songs. Some were excellent. I really loved this series. It was in my Top 10 of the first half of the year. I learnt afterwards that The Magician is the star actor, but for me it was the female lead who carried the show. She does sad SO well lol. I admit the reveals were not super exciting, but I didn't mind that much. Personally, I would have maybe even prefered to leave him shrouded in mystery. I don't usually need to have answers to all questions. (btw..thanks to this video I found your channel, and since I am still here, and even commenting, I think it is obvious what I think about it :) )

I wish this series wasn't a musical. It was really weird when characters suddenly broke into a song. The songs didn't seem necessary. I really agree with your point that it would have worked better if only the magician had sung. It would have worked into the mystery of whether he had actual magic or not.

I think we could have use the time spent on all the songs more effectively. For instance, developing the magician a bit more or even giving some scenes to the class mate who goes missing

So, as someone who is a fan of the webtoon its based off, I will tell you I think they honestly did the best they could have done because it is the type of comic that is very difficult to adapt to the screen and I was honestly surprised when I first heard they were going to do it. So much of the comic relies on the art style and the metaphorical imagery so in order to capture the feel I can understand why they went the theatrical apprach - but I agree a lot of the songs with just Ahyi didn't fit as well. As for the magician's role being minimal, honestly I actually was happy with it cause I was worried that they were going to try to make it a romance when their dynamic really isn't romantic in nature. Ji Chang Wook is also initially one of the only reasons I held on hope for this because he truly is the only k-actor who could have done the role justice. Anyway, those are just some of my thoughts, I reccomend giving the webtoon I try as well. Thanks for the review, it was super fun to hear your take :)

Ji Chang Wook is the first lead here, in official production material, he is always the first. And the female lead is in the second.

In the original story, there is a scene where a male student confesses to Yoon Ai after becoming a college student. In the drama, it was changed to drop out of high school. It drama reminded me of Cinderella and the Edward Scissorhands.

Me today: I hope Marie M reviews A sound of magic 😂. I loved it! Loved the dark fantasy musical premise about a girl overcoming her trauma, loved the actors (the female lead killed it and the male leads were so enjoyable to watch). But I also thought it fizzled near the end mainly because of how they treated the magician. I would have liked the series to be longer so they could have developed his story more.

*SPOILERS* I also thought is backstory was disappointing and how he just disappears in the end to be lazy writing. But, still had so much fun watching it 😁

Los Angeles here with my thoughts. I liked the show a lot, but I think it also needed a couple more episodes to "breath" and also a better idea what characters actually contribute what to the story. I binged it by accident - I thought it would be the standard 12-20+ Netflix length and only realized it was six after watching four and decided to finish it. First off, I really liked Choi Sung-eun as Ah-yi. She really conveyed the despair and misery of her character, so it was wonderful to see her happy in the end. It took awhile to get used to a youngish Kpop guy as the magician and I'm still not sure he nailed the performance, but I think that's more the writing than his abilities. I'm not sure the writers ever really decided what "tone" to use consistently with him; but on most of his scenes, he was wonderful. The rest of the cast was good, but I'm not sure they knew what to do with them either. Hwang In-youp gets a lot of time as her earnstwhile boyfriend, too much for me, since his character doesn't really do much to advance the story and his final ending is ok...and? The "evil stepsister," let's call her, that harasses and taunts Ah-yi is actually a more dynamic character than boyfriend - she has the balls to confront the magician and try to entrap him, but why, really, is she doing it? She wasn't friends with the murdered girl and it's pretty clear she doesn't really care about anyone, so why is she after the Magician? And since she showed the nerve to go after him, I'm surprised he didn't take it as a challenge to try and shake her up a little bit as well. They could have done a lot more with her that would have been more interesting than boyfriend moping around. As to the musical numbers, I normally hate shows where they break out into musical numbers, but here I thought they were interesting. I liked the softer ballads that let Ah-yi express the emotions she couldn't verbalize otherwise and the bigger numbers gave them a chance to show off some nice visual imagination. I also didn't mind the ambiguity about whether the magic was real or not, since it gave Ah-yi a moment of the power, symbolic or not, that she had within her with her final act with the Magician; although they'd have to do a lot of explaining if they ever did another round of it. So overall, I'm happy I binged it and will rewatch it again. My only real gripe is that they didn't bring Bella back for the finale. Certainly she deserved to be there too. It's not "Hotel Del Luna," which is my fantasy fav, but I certainly wouldn't mind recommending it for people that like this sort of thing.

Is it "DON’T MAKE ME DREAM" ? Anyway your verbal expression is very appealing and lovely. I am learning from you the way to express what I think. Thank you Marie.

I don’t get why someone would say Hwang In Yeop is the male lead. Ji Chang Wook is credited first in EVERY promotional materials of this show. Even most the posters has only his photo in them. He is the star of the show.

I would recommend everyone to read the actual webtoon. It's actually really good and makes very good use of the drawing medium, incorporating various styles of imagery to convey emotions that the characters are feeling.

I honestly loved it except the songs I skipped them when they came and I didn’t really like the ending because I felt it was rushed I think if it had more episodes and we got to know more about the missing classmate and all the other stuff it’s a 6/10 for me the -4 is because of 1 the music was annoying 2 it was rushed 3 the missing classmate she had like no story we git to know nothing about her and 4 because of lack of character development I really wanted to see the girl who was like recording the magician and kind of was a bully I wanted her to have more character and a backstory honestly she was just there to make the story make sense and the other characters were a bit to boring but overall if it had all of the things it didn’t have It’d be so much better and it’s a fact.
