My dad who is a Gascon native speaker always said he could «somewhat» understand written Spanish. A lot of words are very similar and don’t exist in French. An example that comes to my mind is «Yegua», which is «ièga» in our Gascon dialect but is «Jument» in French. A lot of verbs too are pretty similar.

Historically I've read that Gascon is the romance language spoken by some of the basks after their assimilation into the Roman Empire in an area which was part of the basks territory, which was then renamed "La Gascogna", nowadays France. On the other hand, it is believed that resistant basks kept their language by hiding and batteling against the Romans. So in short basks and gasconians are one people linguistically and historically divided. That's why in Bayonne Gascon and Bask are both spoken.
