What do the forests of Madagascar sound like at night?
Before I go on any expedition I will spend a good amount of time researching the location and its wildlife. Sometimes there are sound recordings I can listen to, although the quality varies a lot. In the case of Madagascar's Wester dry forests, I could not find much in terms of audio, or even visuals for that matter. This is a very poorly researched area, with shocking levels of poverty and basically undeveloped. It's also fairly dangerous to travel to and the government doesn't have much power so far from the capital. It's a place where people have to be self sufficient, whether that be to feed themselves, provide healthcare or security services.
In these tough and unforgiving situations, wildlife, nature and conservation understandably take a back seat to other, higher priority endeavours. The lack of development however means there are still pockets of nature that have not seen much disturbance. While a lot of Madagascar has been logged and burned, some areas are so remote and difficult to reach that they've been largely left wild.
The area in and around Bemaraha National Park is a good example. It's managed as a National Park and people generally respect that, but there are still signs of illegal logging. People sometimes go in and forage as they've done so for millennia. It's all fairly limited though and the impact on nature seems to be negligible.
I was very excited to record the sounds of this part of the world when I visited in 2022. Since there is no access allowed in the park after 6pm, the only way to do it was to set up a few drop rigs in strategic locations. Deep in the park there is a nice grassy area surrounded by rocky pinnacles and sparse woodland. The acoustics there are very good, and it's far enough from villages and roads that not much anthropophony reaches it. I can hear a very distant cow mooing occasionally in this recording, probably an individual that strayed away from a village and got lost. Otherwise it's just the sounds of Madagascar's wilderness as they probably have been there for aeons. Enjoy!
