So for me, I absolutely love sparring and I almost went professional at one point, meaning I was lucky to have parents giving me that choice (and finances) to decide on becoming a pro fighter in MMA. Problem is - I hate hurting people. In an octagon, you’re there to hurt the other guy and dismantle him in the most effective way while trying your best to avoid the same response toward you. I love the movement, the chaos, I even love getting chucked around and the whole deal, myself being hyperactive and pretty intense. But yea, I just hate seeing the other person being decimated by the kicks, punches, breaks etc ….leaving them potentially hospitalised. I don’t get attracted to harming others. But absolutely 100% if I lived anywhere near you Ramsey, I’d love to train with you. I know I’d only gain from what I’ve seen you do. I also love how you practice your movement in so many various ways, moving upside down, swivelling on your head, etc. really dynamic. I guess its less pragmatic than the 2 books you mentioned but I'm surprised there was no Myamoto Musashi shout out in the question about Martial Arts theory! I specifically enjoyed his lessons about leadership, selecting different men for different roles and the professions of men, and also his theories about always stabbing the face and learning to fight with two swords. I feel like alot of these things haven't changed over hundreds of years and they are still applicable in martial arts and combat in general today. Also he has a proven track record, allegedly... Side question coach: Do you think Musashi's record is embelished or do you think he's really like 60-0 in personal combat fights to the death?

Applying Musashi to hand-to-hand combat as opposed to swordfighting is tricky, because all of his advice is geared towards a ruleset where there aren't really any exchanges, so initiative is everything. If you get hit with a sword and you're not wearing armour, even in a non-lethal spot, you cannot continue to fight effectively, so whoever hits first wins. Initiative is still REALLY important in unarmed fighting, but it's not the ultimate advantage that Musashi writes about, because there's no guarantee even a perfectly timed, perfectly placed hit will finish the fight the way a sword strike does. You have to plan on taking hits as well.

You know, my hypothesis to the race question has been something I've been afraid to say out loud to too many people. And it isn't a hypothesis I'm willing to die for. I could be wrong. I've sparred/coached plenty of white and black people in boxing and my personal hypothesis is that, black people (not all of course) seem to have better senses of rhythm even when they just started. Where as the white people I've coached and sparred with, have had to REALLY take the time and effort to learn and understand rhythm in a combat sport setting. Where as that aspect isn't as much of a learning curve with the black people I've coached and sparred. This of course is a generality and anecdotal but I see it play out the same way in a lot of classic boxing fights where the elite black fighters tend to bulldoze anybody with a white complexion. The white fighters generally didn't have the ability to set and break rhythm at the level that a lot of their black competitors did. Again, I'm willing to be wrong on this. There's also great white fighters and terrible black fighters in any combat sport, just speaking from my experience and observations.

I already brought MVP up while you talked about unsportsmanlike behavior in the ring/octagon. To be honest I changed my opinion about Michael Page, because he mostly finished his fights by one singe clean technic, without causing any aditional damage. Nevertheless his style looks extremly unorthodox, and one of his KO's looked as if it was designed for a movie. So my question is, what is your opinion about MVP. Is he that good, or did he just fight the "perfect" opponents ?

If perfect means "handpicked cans" then yes, he fights perfect opponents

It's funny how if you talk about any fighter and their wins, someone will bring up "tin cans". Most of these people probably wouldn't last 2 minutes in a light sparring session against someone with a losing streak on Bellator's preliminary card.
@merkins87

@@rohitchaoji every fighter has his merits, but when you have a protected fighter with a padded record going up against a journeyman that isn't concerned about protecting his record and has bills to pay, you increase the likelihood of permanent injuries. Cyborg had a middling record and had no business being in the cage with Page. Was he a tough fighter? Absolutely. Did he have a hope in hell of winning? No and had a career-ending skull fracture for his efforts. This isn't about who's a great fighter; this is about greedy promoters pumping up whomever is going to make them money today and fuck everybody else if they get CTE/whatever other debilitating injury is on offer.
@rohitchaoji

@@merkins87 You make valid points. But we're also forgetting that before fighters go pro, they probably have tens of amateur fights with equally middling opponents. I don't think we should get caught up on pro fighters fighting other pros that we've never heard of, because everyone starts their pro career somewhere.

Stupid Question: Can you throw a Gazelle Punch (Gazelle Hook) with the rear hand? Whenever I see fighters using this move (prime examples in my mind being Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson) they always seem to only perform it with the lead hand (I suppose it is probably because it is the closest hand to the opponent, therefore the shorter the path to get to targets), so much so that whenever their opponents were going into the direction of their rear hand, and if they were to fire a Gazelle Punch to their opponents, the types like Patterson and Tyson would first quickly shift stances to turn the rear hand into a lead hand, and then throw the punch itself. Is there some kind of disadvantage or impractical aspect to trying to throw a Gazelle Punch with the rear hand instead of the lead hand, aside from the aforementioned advantage of the lead hand being closer to the opponent? Second Stupid Question: Is it practical, or if at all possible to add uppercuts DURING the Dempsey Roll? Would the vertical movement of the uppercut mesh well with the side-to-side bobbing & weaving and the speed skater-like footwork, which seem to mesh way better with hooks, if it were to be thrown consecutively during the roll? I ask this because I see many people talking about how the pattern of the Dempsey Roll is simple and predictable, and so I would like to know your opinion about this, if you think this is a big issue or not, and if so, do you think adding uppercuts in order to create a new variable of offense during the move is a good idea to even begin with? If you've read this, thank you for your patience and attention!

Stupid Question: I've been training for 1.5 years, at a women's self defense gym, but told I'm still not ready to spar. I've even been asked to be an instructor because my technique is clean and I learn quickly. I'm told I'll form bad habits if I spar too soon. Should or can I join another gym, so I can begin sparring? I haven't been taught new techniques for months. I'm worried I'll stop progressing even though I continously train.

Red flag #1: "women's self defense gym." Red flag #2: You've been there for a year and a half and they won't let you spar. Red flag #3: "I haven't been taught new techniques for months." DUMP that gym. go find a good (MMA or BJJ or boxing or whatever style you feel like) gym and start learning again. Try out different gyms in your area. You sound really motivated, you need a gym that will offer growth opportunities not one that will hold you back. Most of all, DO NOT let your old gym hold on to you through manipulation. If they catch a whiff of you leaving they will try to guilt trip you into staying. They will leverage your personal connections into controlling your actions. Be resolute. I have only read a few sentences from you and even I can tell this gym is garbage. I mean, you'll form "bad habits" if you spar? WTF is coaching for then? If they are incapable of coaching you correctly in a spar then they are not worthy of your time, money, or loyalty. They sound like a culty cash grab. Good luck to you and I wish you well in your search for a new martial arts home.

You need to be careful with stats like that - for example, in the NBA there is no correlation between height and points scored. Does this mean that height doesn't matter in basketball? No, it means that the short guys need to have more skills to make it into the NBA. You could also have an effect where lefties choose to go into boxing over MMA, because they have a greater advantage there. Especially in a sport with matchmaking, there are lots of weird selection effects to look out for. Don't really have a direct opinion on the answer to "is there a southpaw advantage in MMA", just being a nerd in the comments.

I've said it on this channel already but: I'm a lefty that would rather train primarily orthodox if I can't/not allowed to switch-hit, however my kickboxing school wants me to do southpaw only, or at least for now. I started with fencing at 14 with left lead. My right side is my bad side. Did some TMA and JKD that had me left lead. I'd rather keep my liver away and protected as much as I can. Depending on if I go into Wrestling or Judo i'll probably want left leg lead, as from what I understand strong leg lead is better. Idk though 🤷 Southpaws only have an advantage where stances, or rather sides, are static and only when against an orthodox/righty has very little experience against a lefty. And in those, a right has the same advantages against a lefty, it's just that a lefty has spent most of their time training against righty/orthodox fighters. Whereas a righty has not spent most of their time fighting against lefties. If a righty turns into a switch and learns how to use their right on right skills vs a lefty, they will have a massive advantage over that lefty, who likely doesn't have much experience on right vs right or left vs left, unless they are switch and understand how same side fighting work too...
