It's 1492. Spain had just concluded its Reconquista, with Castile becoming the strongest state in the kingdom. After the War of the Castilian Succession and the Treaty of Alcacovas, Spain was settled on a westward expansion.
In August, 1492 Christopher Columbus sets out on his journey, discovering America. The Treaty of Tordesillas is concluded, and Columbus makes 3 more journeys, but proves to be an unable governor. In 1502 Nicolas de Ovando takes over and transforms Hispaniola into a successful colony.
However there is very little gold in the Caribbean and the Taino people have nearly gone extinct. The answer is more expansion. Vasco Nunez de Balboa establishes a successful colony at Darien, and goes on to discover the Pacific Ocean.
Meanwhile the Portuguese have already established themselves in India and the Malaccas. Charles V needs to catch up, therefore he sends Ferdinand Magellan to the Philippines. In 1522 Magellan completes the first circumnavigation of the Earth, expanding the Spanish Empire to Asia. Now the only peace missing from the Empire is Mexico.
