@HiNinqi

@@sudzy2779 an idea for the length would be to make the skirt have built in gathers via channels with a pull string in it So that it vertically shortens/lengthens the dress by gathering it via the cord. I had a cheap petticoat from amazon that gathered vertically like this and it was really nice til it fell apart from being made cheaply. I cant find a lisitng for it anymore for a visual tho. There were 4 spots where the cords were that brought up the skirt higher or shorter based on how much one pulled the height to be. It looked really pretty too.
@sinnastevenson2302
Жыл бұрын
@@sudzy2779 Definitely go for the smaller age ranges. My daughter added fifteen inches in ten years. Particularly as they are harder on their clothes when younger - mine exploded a pen in the pocket, jumped in the creek, ripped it on a swing - it can be unreasonable with more active children to expect it to last more than a year or two. If you made the overlap just a touch excessive, say three inches instead of one, she'll get at least three or four inches of growth out of each size. I can tell you that it makes very little difference in look or functionality. I did this to make skirts that fit over the entire course of a pregnancy. I currently have three made with a slightly smaller overlap so they'll continue to fit as I lose weight.

Why would someone pull down their skirt to use the bathroom? Most of my long skirts are historical so I have split drawers underneath and facing the tank is the way to go with a hoop and corset. It works very well for modern Western toilets, even when wearing a chemise, cotte, and dress. Which all in all comes together for three skirt layers! I've also had to use a squat toilet in a long skirt before, in this case it is easiest to gather around the waist in front of yourself and hug to your chest with one hand while you keep the other free for cleaning yourself. Just make sure you keep holding it up until after you've stood up or you could dip it into the commode haha

So the upper part is shaped like a rectangle and the size is fitted. The lower part around bust and belly is loose because of the pleats. It was cut as a big rectangle. So the size of bust and belly may vary over time. The long sleeves are also cut very wide and ruffled at the shoulder and the hand for changing arm circumferences. Bless you!

Your method is absolutely correct. Get that fabric out of the way of the splash zone and do what ya gotta do. Sorry, can't really help you there. Because my character was pretty active and my faire went from July to early September (so very warm), I made my corset so it goes from just over the "bristols" down to my natural waist. Because of that, didn't have to worry about the conflict that you have. That said, wearing "bloomers", yoga pants, or stretchy shorts (without the undies 😮) could solve your problem as they would go over the corset instead of under.

The way I managed it was the interfacing of the skirt was elastic, but the outside of the top of the skirt was completely independent from the elastic save for the top seam. This allowed for the material to gap between where the elastic hugged my waist, and the flattened appearance of the waistline created by the outer material, which graduated to a pleat

I‘m a shoulder-flipper too. I‘m from Bavaria and sometimes wearing a Dirndl with a long and heavy skirt. This is the way!

I had that for years, I would shake so badly. It seemed to hark back to school days of having to stand and read aloud to the whole class. Previously we had been allowed to do it sitting. Not sure how old I was but well before 11 years old. Practice doing a short duration is all I can say, it worked for me. Try having a prop - something to hold or have a large 'something' on the wall beside you and keep pointing your hand to it. When they all turn their head away from you towards the chart it will feel such a relief. Love your channel. You shouldn't feel you have to explain as it is obvious from watching that this is a first attempt and may not work out.

I'm kind of thinking about making the "bridal buddy" that was all the rage when I was getting married (I wore it, but didn't actually end up using it because I peed before I put on my gown, got undressed and peed before changing into my ceremony dress where I wore the bridal buddy. I didn't sew either dress, I did sew my garter because I couldn't find one to fit, it wouldn't stay on so my groom hid it in his sleeve before "removing" it from my leg. I absolutely recommend this hack.) The bridal buddy is just a white under skirt net that you wear under your dress, and when it's time to "go", you reach under the dress to find the mesh, and you pull up, gathering up all the floofy skirt inside and find the draw string and tighten it up near your neck with a little toggle. You poke your hands through 2 "something blue" arm holes and take care of business. You poke your arms in and release the toggle, and gravity does most of the work and wash your hands. I donated mine after because I didn't think I would have a use for it. A tea length version would be nice.

Oo I've actually heard of this, and I was totally in need of one the other day cause I made this rather giant skirt that was a bit much even for the hike/gather/toss over the shoulder method! I should definitely make one to have on hand for these bigger gowns...

A tip (not critique, criticism, etc. Just a hopefully helpful tip) When you need a piece of fabric to be more sturdy, such as for pockets, waistbands, grommet-holding-without-tearing, there is a magic thing called 'interfacing'. Interfacing is designed especially to sturdy-ise a fabric. You can get both iron-on glued interfacing, and a sew-in non-glued interfacing. I prefer sew-in interfacing, because if you picked the wrong interfacing you can remove it and try again with a different sturdy-ness.

I haven’t tried that way. But I think I will try it, seems easier than the way I’m doing it now, scrunching it all together in front. But it also may effect the over the shoulder method would be the length of the skirt. What is difficult is going to the bathroom in a regular bathroom stall and you are wearing a dress with a hoop skirt underneath.

Pull your hoops up in the front, flattened it to your chest and pop a one-legged squat on the toilet, et voila! I usually wipe the seat cuz shoes.

😅Hoop skirts and similar styles are traditionally used with split drawers (or none at all depending on era). You face the back of the toilet, lift the front of the dress, hoop, and petticoats and then sit facing the back.

I do floof up the back. I at least pull everything to the front, if not crunched. It has never occurred to me to throw it over my shoulder, but I love this idea.

So, I'm testing my first video after your "viral sucks" video which caught my attention and introduced you to my viewing. And I had to stop at the "is this what you do with your skirt to use..." section. You are not alone. However, my "tuck" version differs in that I always wear a slip (and hence never suffer "sunshine issues") and my skirt gets "bundled" into the slip in the same fashion that you floofed and folded in front of yourself - so no "over the shoulder throw" for me, just a "lump" of material bundled into front of me in my slip, which itself has been "flipped" up. Everything is tucked, covered, and safe from whatever! You're convincing me I need to be a core member - I like your presentation and realistic, relatable (and god, I hate that word) presence.

Im 66 and as I always wear maxi skirts the way to hold them for the loo is to gather up and through over your shoulder like you, only way not to have it all pooling on the grubby floor:-) just like you do. also now going to be using your pattern to make me lots of skirts. thanks

My Renaissance costume and I agree, you fluff the back, crunch it all forward, and toss it over a shoulder. All in the confines of a Porta privy. Just make sure that tail (the part one shows over one's shoulder) isn't so long you still manage to sit on it. Wine (lots of wine) and mead (lots and lots) and long puffy skirts and small porta privies and being 6ft tall, doesn't mix! 😂

If it's a short enough skirt with an elastic waist, I'll slide it down like shorts. I don't really wear anything long enough to over-the-shoulder - it generally gathers in my lap. Love how like all the comments on this video are bathroom stories! Love the whole rambling walk through the creative process though. I really need to get sewing again.

Definitely hiking the skirt up instead of pulling it down in the loo. Even a midi pencil skirt! The exception is a ankle-length pencil skirt.

I love this. I used to have a knee legenth skirt like this with Velcro. And I had two pair of bell-bottoms this way but more like the sailor cracker jack pants. I think they were called deck pants. Anyway I choose your style.

You are 1000% correct. I've managed to go to the portaprivy at ren faires and SCA camp events wearing like 5 layers, and that's how I always do it. [hands you a certificate of validation]

I definitely pull it all up front, but then I tend to kind of fold/tuck it so it stays up front rather than sling it over my shoulder. Because I am uncoordinated and it will not stay there. (I've tried!)
