The Loretto Chapel staircase is a remarkable architectural feat, but not a mystery. It is a double helix spiral staircase that was built by a carpenter named Francois Jean Rochas in the late 1870s. He used wood pegs and an inner stringer to support the structure, which has no central pole or newel. The wood he used was a type of spruce, which he probably obtained from a nearby source. The staircase was designed to fit the small space of the chapel and to access the choir loft. The legend that the staircase was built by St. Joseph or a mysterious stranger is not true, but rather a result of the lack of documentation and the admiration of the sisters of Loretto who commissioned the chapel. Some additional sentences are: • The staircase has 33 steps, which some people believe is a symbolic reference to the age of Christ at his death. However, this is likely a coincidence, as the number of steps was determined by the height of the loft and the angle of the staircase. • The staircase is still standing today and is open to the public as part of the Loretto Chapel museum and wedding venue. It is considered a masterpiece of craftsmanship and a beautiful example of Gothic Revival style. • The staircase has been featured in several books, documentaries, and movies, such as the 1998 film "The Staircase," starring Barbara Hershey and William Petersen. It has also attracted the interest of engineers, historians, and tourists who marvel at its design and construction.

There is no mystery here, and definitely no miracle ! It was built by an expert carpenter, yes. But it was unstable and unsafe from the get go as it had a steep incline, so much so that the nuns had to crawl down to prevent falling. And an iron railing had to be added years later to prevent accidents. In fact it hasn’t been used as a staircase for decades to prevent structural collapse. The staircase does have a central wooden support, an inner wooden stringer of small diameter which functions as a solid pole. We also know the name and origin of the french carpenter who definitely had an entire and comprehensive set of tools, which has also been documented. There was payment made for services rendered as there were receipts found and we even know where he is buried. Spruce is the wood that is was made of, which is hardly uncommon in the Americas. Samples of the wood are not allowed to be taken for scientific examination, so it’s impossible to determine the exact species of spruce used. Wooden pegs were the norm at the time since iron nails were expensive and difficult to come by. The church is a privately owned ‘for profit museum’ so there is an obvious financial incentive and motive to perpetuate a ‘miraculous’ mystery, especially in a religious setting. And lastly, the ‘mysterious carpenter’ rode in on a donkey you say, well he definitely made asses of a lot of believers ! 🙄🤦🏽♂️🤣

Why are people who literally know little to nothing about carpentry other than a hammer and a box of nails, take a sledgehammer of cynicism towards a beautiful masterpiece of artistry. Lighten up and enjoy taking steps towards appreciating a happy story, true or otherwise. A spiral staircase to a a nun’s choir loft is an extraordinary deed of patience, kindness and love. Nobody has a patent or a copyright on another’s charitable belief or their interpretation of childlike innocence. Why be cruel to a genuine deed of generosity, and an inspiration act of kindness. Unfortunately, religiously, one can go to sermons and communions, take a bite of the Lords scripture, a Eucharist host in their mouth or hands, seemingly devoutly. Then, 10-minutes out of church, spew a rage of angry profanity’s. Spew hatred and lie’s with cruel, crude and insane theories. … these Loretta Chapels sisters would forgive them and their unconscionable words and actions.
