Growing up in Canada (Kamloops, British Columbia to be precise - a six-hour drive through the mountains to Calgary, Alberta, The Stampeders' hometown), I heard lots of Stampeders songs on the radio. They weren't as big as The Guess Who, nor did they have as many hits/anthems, but I thought The Stampeders made better albums. Their earlier stuff was more country-rock, and then they changed to a heavier style similar to BTO. Other great songs of theirs include Devil You, Wild Eyes, Carry Me, Oh My Lady, Julia Get Up, Running Wild, Ramona and an excellent cover of Gary US Bonds' hit New Orleans. They broke up around 1980, but got back together in the early 90s and have been together ever since.

I was 13 when "Sweet City Woman" was released, all over the radio in 1971; I was obsessed with it. I loved everything about it, the banjo, the vocals, the hopefulness in the lyrics, the guitar solos, the macaroons. I never got tired of it and I never will. There are a few songs like that, not necessarily by my favorite bands, but songs that I've heard for 40 or 50 years, but never tire of. "Maggie May", by Rod Stewart; "All Right Now", by Free; "Closer to Home", by Grand Funk Railroad; "More Than a Feeling", by Boston; "Midnight At the Oasis", by Maria Muldaur; these are all songs that it seem liked they TRIED to make you sick of, by it never did, not for me.

60 - 70s Rock from Calgary Canada. The band formed in Calgary, Alberta in 1964 as The Rebounds. The Rebounds had five members: Rich Dodson, Len Roemer, Brendan Lyttle, Kim Berly, and Race Holiday. They renamed themselves The Stampeders in 1965 and Len Roemer was replaced with Ronnie King and Van Louis. In 1966 they relocated to Toronto, Ontario, and became a trio in 1968 when Lyttle, Louis, and Holiday left. In 1971 the Stampeders had a hit with "Sweet City Woman," which won Best Single at the Juno Awards, reached #1 on the RPM magazine charts, and #8 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Written by Dodson, the track stayed in the Billboard chart for 16 weeks and the disc sold a million by September 1971, and the R.I.A.A. granted gold disc status. The Stampeders also won Juno Awards for Best Group, Best Producer (Mel Shaw), and Best Composer (Dodson) that year. The band signed with Polydor Records for US distribution. By 1975 the band had toured extensively in the United States and appeared on television shows.[6] In 1976 they had another Canadian hit with "Hit The Road Jack", featuring Wolfman Jack. In Canada they produced seven more hits. Dodson left the group in 1977. Berly and King recruited new members for the LP Platinum (1977). Berly then departed, leaving King to bring in three new members for the LP Ballsy (1979), and the band broke up shortly thereafter. The hitmaking trio reunited at the Calgary Stampede in 1992. They released a new album in 1998 titled Sure Beats Working. On November 21, 2011, The Stampeders received the Lifetime Achievement Award from SOCAN at the 2011 SOCAN Awards in Toronto. In 2015 the band received SOCAN Classic Awards for their songs "Monday Morning" and "Wild Eyes." They continue to tour Canada doing fairs, festivals, casinos, and theatres.

This brings me back to 1971 when I was ten years old. This was the first record I ever bought. My friend & I played that 45 single over and over. It must have drove my parents crazy but I don't remember that part. Great to hear it again!

"You Told Me" by The Monkees is another rocker with a prominent banjo part (and a zither thrown in for good measure).

When I was 16, The Stampeders came through my small Canadian town as the musical act part of our local fair. We also saw Lighthouse, Freddy Fender (dude was a ganja king) and sooooooooo many others, some that went on to fame and fortune, others already had it and some never went anywhere...what a blast the 70's were.....I miss the vibe and you help bring it back in way. You rock. Thanks!!

This song seemed to be played on the radio a lot during the summer, maybe it's just me ,lol, but it brings back memories when summer seemed to last forever. Please check out another great Canadian band called Lighthouse and their song Sunny Days which also signified summer for me as a kid in the 70's.
