Great interview - this was his best ever track i feel, although he made many great ones from that era. The guy has a talent for melody - you could argue for Escape...is it an uplifting melody,or is it a meloncholic melody? It could be either! I did enjoy the Der Mystik update aswell..

Yeah I have the same opinion, Escape is my favorite from Airbase and unfortunately I don't know of another trance track with the same vibe. Sure I've heard a lot of sad trance nothing that manages the same vibe of utter melancholy (of course all of this is entirely subjective). One speculation I can make is that a contributing factor perhaps is the stereo picture in the track - if you listen to Escape on only the left or right channel it sounds awful, compared to your average trance track which is designed to be mono friendly.

Thank you! And I really focus on big hits / classics from the past, so Andy is not really oh my list tbh. These interviews take a lot of preparation / time, so even though I love his stuff, I’m very picky with who I ask for interviews. Interviews about tracks that are not known as much to a bigger public simply don’t get enough views. Besides that, it doesn’t seem he ever played in the Netherlands, so that’s another big issue. I can only do interviews with people who live nearby or people who are visiting for shows etc. I don’t have a travel budget for these interviews unfortunately. It is just a hobby and advertising revenue isn’t simply enough for big trips all the time.

Great interview! And I really like how artists open up to share some more personal thoughts about their craft, like Jezper does here about the difficulty to connect intro and main parts. Makes me feel a bit less shitty, knowing that other producers also have lots of unfinished loops or sketches on their harddrives 😉 All the more reason to respect how he still powered through these challenges to make some really great tracks that moved me back in the days! My favourite might be "Scarab vs. DJ Stigma - Hunting", partly because it is unreleased but also since it is just such an energetic uplifting monster track. My "history" with Escape is actually a bit of a bumpy ride, at first I didn't like it and didn't get the vinyl back then. Sometime later, a DJ friend of mine did a vocal bootleg version together with his girlfriend and her friend who were both singers and they wrote and sang lyrics to that track. He surprised us all by playing that bootleg at an event we hosted, and I was blown away! Through this version, the track grew on me and nowadays I can appreciate the original instrumental version as well 😃

Maaan, so relatable. I'm no known DJ or producer for sure, but have the same "problem". I build an intro, build the melody and just leave it because have no idea or inspiration to link them both together so that it makes sense. I've actually done a self-made bootleg remix of your Genie 10 years ago, that was the very very first track I was satisfied with and posted it online for everyone to see on my soundcloud

I suspect a contributing factor is that we lack music theory training, or at least that's my case. E.g. put Hanz Zimmer on it instead and he will figure out a logical transition. Recently I've had luck letting ChatGPT 4 recommend chords for me (of course I make the final choice) so I intend to explore that route further whenever I need to figure out how to connect something musically.

3-4 hours to make a "filler track" Escape which is one of the best trance music pieces ever written??? That was shockin news for me, as well as Jezper randomly picking the name for it XD Hard to believe how such little effort could generate such trance gem :S Also he mentioned the potential "Escape" remixer - Jon Hopkins & Hybrid - I agree with these choices, love their music. I would add Ace da Brain, TrancEye, and maybe The Digital Blonde. From the non-trance acts - Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Carbon Based Lifeforms. I just don't like the "Escape (Sunny Lax Remix)" from 2021 - that remix just destroyed this precious gem. Also Jezper being in a #teampineappleonpizza was a "turn-off" for me. "Trance isn't very open to infuences from the outside" - I agree with this statement, that's why I also listen to dnb, synthwave, chillout, classical music and even rock sometimes. Sometimes I can forget about trance and dive into other genres for few months, but in the end I always come back to trance, as I still haven't found a better music genre. I clearly see Jezper diving into more commercial music but that's fine - I will still listen to his 2002-2010 masterpieces throughout all my life (I consider that as his golden era).

Hmmm, disagree that trance is conservative and inwards looking overall. Lots of trance featuring all sorts of instruments, violins, guitars, flute's and almost any imaginable instruments to help it stand out, very few other EDM's styles incorporate as many difference instruments as trance does! You have orchestral trance, vocal, deep, uplifting, breakbeat. Trance, if anything, has also influenced a lot of pop music in the last 15 years when so many begun using blatantly staple trance sounds on pop records (Usher and many R&B artists, Britney etc). It's true that some of the sequencing is rigid, due to the nature of dance music, it has to be synced to the kick, but that applies to most EDM music.
