Bacon Lord They're from the current punk wave, a rebelllion against hipsterdom. They are 'post-ironic'. They look like they give no fucks at a glance, but just scratching the surface reveals they give a massive, throbbing, angry, frothing, arcane fuck. They remember the sins of developers and publishers past. Bungie was like this before Activision ate them. Microsoft was afraid to send envoys to the offices.

The more impressive thing was Twitch's ridiculous "Pre Pre Show" that encased Devolver's conference and itself served as a parody of all the E3 pre shows, and was probably the most entertaining and batshit thing I've ever seen come out of E3, and even showed off some cool games and had a few of their own exclusive announcements 11 goddamn hours of my life very well spent

When I watched it live, I literally did not expect anything like it to show up. E3 was putting me to sleep because it was, well, _competent_ outside of a smaller than usual few fuck ups. An E3 without any schadenfreude is not a fun one, people like myself enjoy E3 because it shows that these big AAA publishers are indeed human after all. So as a result of everything being so well rehearsed (with a few exceptions) I was falling asleep cause I didn't rest well around E3. But Devolver's conference woke me the fuck up, like, I was crying from laughter throughout because it was such a perfect parody. The twitch chat was cancer, it was going "Cringe", "Where's the games", etc. without realizing that was the joke, it took everything we expected from E3 and turned it up to 11 and it was fantastic. It's honestly the only thing I remember clearly from this E3, aside from sony showing almost no new games.

I loved the DD video for a lot of the same reasons I really enjoy the strange Adult Swim infomercials and odd projects that they air. All of it is designed as an absurd parody that slightly crosses the line into insanity. Also I didn't know that DD actually have their hand in films as well. If they're even remotely as absurd as that "press conference" I'm going to have to check that stuff out. Thanks Super Bunnyhop and Nigel Lowrie for this awesome interview that sheds some light on the strangeness that was my favorite part of E3.

While a bit "try-hard" one still has to admire all the money, time, and, effort DD put into this show- just to troll the very concept of E3. It also helps that most of their games are fun and justify so much money being spent on the show.

@Eon2641

The "try-hard" works for the comedy, though. That's basically every E3 press conference ever, from bragging about tera-flops to "massive damage!", it wouldn't be an effective jab unless they went full try-hard.
@caiopatric
7 жыл бұрын
Its just absurdist comedy. my favorite kind of funny. the more effort you put into a shitty joke, the better. watch the eric andre show for further inspection.
@Cadaveralien
7 жыл бұрын
I think that even in absurdist or over-the-top comedy there is still an art of grace and "subtlety" (for a lack of a better word) some do better than others, I would take infomercials (the show, not actual ones) over the eric andre show any day, Alan Resnick can pull the oxymoron that is natural awkwardness flawlessly and Ben O'Brien can write completely absurd scripts without any trace of being try-hard. Being apologetic about something being a cringefest on the grounds of being absurdist comedy is a huge disservice to comedy (not that the conference was THAT bad by any means but still)
@caiopatric
7 жыл бұрын
Well... the "subtlety" is in the underlying message and/or tone under the "veil". under the foreskin of the joke. it should be pretty obvious that "absurd" comedy is over-the-top. not necessarily in energy, but it always is in one way or another. it has many layers. and it assumes that you're already in the joke before it begins. i hope i'm not being too vague but its fucking hard to talk about comedy. sure it wasn't all gold in the devolver conference, but i think the sum of its parts make it a nice little pearl. a small shine in the big e3 turd.
