"Blue Jay Way" is a road above the Sunset Strip in an area called "Birdland". All the streets have bird names. The house was owned by their US attorney Robert Fitzpatrick. Robert and I were business partners for years, I've been to that house many times. In the back of George's autobiography "I Me Mine" you can see the handwritten lyrics on Fitzpatrick's stationary. It's a very difficult house to find, the streets are windy. The image he's using in this video is not the house. The Blue Jay Way house has a round swimming pool. And it's true the organ is still there, or was last time I was there. And yes Bridge Over Troubled Water was written there too, at least in part.

Wow, thank you for this info! Is the house the same shape and style as it was in the 60s or has it been reshaped and rebuilt? I saw it on Google maps but a lot of the houses seem either new or re-built/re-developed there. Here in UK, a lot of houses still look the same as they did a 100 years ago albeit with new doors, windows, guttering, roofs etc but still basically the same shape and bricks. I live in one such house built at the end of 19th century.

First time I heard Revolver in 66 my fave song was 'I Want to Tell You', still is. Within Without was fave rave on Peppers. Best Beatle or solo album was 'All things must Pass. Truly my fave Beatle song writer. Blue Jay was a filler for MMT. Loved Badge (with Clapton)\ and adored Photograph which G wrote with Ringo. I never heard George as Quiet.

"Spotty teenagers". Seriously George is known as this great guy but he is negative in practically every single interview. He slags off every other musician from David Bowie to Zeppelin, to Neil Young. He constantly slags off Paul McCartney. I love The Beatles but he seemed to be such a bitter person. What a shitty way to speak about his fans.

Yeah his trip to Haight definitely disillusioned him to both lsd and the hippie movement. I saw a film that showed interviews of people who lived there before the summer of 1967 and they said it was a cool place, bohemian in nature with bands and artists living there. By summer of 1967 when the schools had broken up for summer, loads of teenagers decended on there thinking it was some haven for free food, free drugs etc. It became a nightmare compared to what it was before then with loads of kids sleeping rough on the streets, begging, taking drugs on the streets, having nothing to eat etc. Maybe if George had visited it 6 months earlier or in 1966 he might have felt different about the area. When I visited it for the first time in 1996, I wasn't impressed. My sister was born not far from the Haight Ashbury in 1983 at the University Hospital. We are from England also, that's where we all live now.

While John my have denounced the use of psychedelics, he ultimately returned to it saying psychedelics were like TM, except that LSD was faster and easier to use to 'get there'. George said his experience in seeing the hippies in San Francisco was an eye opener. In an interview, he said LSD was only really needed once or twice. When the interviewer asked him about that, George replied with a grin, "No, I used it lots of times."

Sorry, but outside of being a song on a Beatle album Blue Jay Way has nothing in common with Strawberry Fields Forever and I am the Walrus. Others may feel different but in my opinion Blue Jay Way and the rest of George's Indian stuff is...well, to be kind, boring. Kevin Costner put it best in the beginning of Field of Dreams where he talks about going to college, smoking pot, and trying to learn to like sitar music. Did you copy and paste that bit of commentary from Wikipedia or some other website? As for George's pal, the Maharshi, one his former drivers summed up the little guy quite well when he said he was driving him around in his limo and as he looked out the window at all the poor people. He asked him why it was that Mother Theresa was willing to get in the trenches and help them while he wasn't. Maharishi casually replied that they were living out their karma and who was he to interfere with that. After that exchange the guy dropped the Maharishi off back at his estate with his helicopter and fleet of limos, called him a phony and told him to get bent. I think George meant well but he was young and had a very superficial understanding of a lot of stuff, as most of did in our 20s.

I always had the feeling that George wrote BJW with a lot more going on than a person might be aware of on first listen. This video unpacks a lot of my curiosity! Thanks! That drone sound seems to contribute to a sense of inertia and exhaustion. It gives me the feeling that George was using the drone as a way to keep himself grounded and ground the tune behind his serpentine vocals, almost like a wordless, musical mantra. The lyrics also have plenty to unpack, parallel to the vocals & instrumentation. It's a fascinating song if you sit with it long enough. p.s. ⚡️ *shocking* ⚡️ that the organ refused to continue playing after helping George to create this quite unusual tune
