Interesting, the dragon being in this reminds me of similar sounding Old Ones in Bloodbourne as coming from another place and they are where they were not intended to be and they are wrong and causing problems. The Dragons blood is the origin of much strangeness, Like Kos, parasites warping the inhabitants in the old fishing village (bloodbourne), and the other Old One that they find inthe underground caverns n Bloodbourne where the original experimenters use the old blood for healing and longevity, but it causes mutations into beasts and other strangeness. It just stood out to me to sound like all the games have similar ancient creatures that fell out of some other reality or dimension, Except Dark Souls dragons seem to be more numerous in its lore,and perhaps the Sekiro dragon is a refugee from the purge of dragons in the dark souls world. But then Demon Souls doesnt fit the pattern, except that Demons are prevalent in that game and also in Sekiro. They are all very fascinating.

The demons act as his protectors and students, learning compassion and decency. They go to the west, the land of the immortals and Buddha himself to attain the text that would allow humans to achieve enlightenment and immortality. In Dragon's Return, the protector would be Sekiro, the monk is now the one carrying the dragon, and they go to the West to return immortality to its birthplace.

Thanks for the video! This makes me think that the entire rash of infestation below was in fact thanks to simple noble hierarchy struggles. There is only ever one carp, evidenced by the rivalry between the two pot nobles who want you to kill the current carp (you can only help one of them succeed). The Nobles convince others to poison their current Carp with Truly Precious Bait, the Bait becomes the infestation that leaks all over the palace and to the lands below, and they continue with their power games even after their society collapses. All so they can become an "immortal" Carp that will almost certainly be assassinated by the next successor. Allegory!

4:56 There's actually another possible theory here: I'm massively simplifying it, but Fudou Myouou is a guardian buddha. He typically holds a sword in its hand (it also typically has it in the right hand as opposed to left as it would be in the game, but for now let's ignore this point) called the Kurikara sword, which is actually the sword form of a black(!) dragon god that wraps itself in flames(!). If you take a closer look, that hand is completely burned off. The black immortal edge's name is "Open gate", as in to the underworld; it's why it has the power to bring back Isshin in the game. It would make sense to think that such a sword can manifest the feelings of those in the underworld, such as the flames of hatred. If both of the immortal edges were in the hands of the Senpou monks (We were never told if only one or both of the immortal edges were at Senpou Temple, only that Isshin knows at least one is/was there), the natural solution [for monks] to a blade with such an issue would be to place it in the inner sanctum out of reach of the people, in the hands of a guardian buddha would could bear the onus of withstanding that hatred. Assuming that's the case, there's an in-game explanation as to why the Monkey is the bearer of hatred: the Monkey took the blade from the buddha, thus receiving the onus of being the bearer of hatred. It would explain why he continues to sculpt buddhist statues, because he knew that's how the hatred was withheld before. Why would the monkey steal the sword? Because Tomoe wanted the Immortal Severance. Seeing what it did to the monkey, however, probably changed the minds of Isshin and Tomoe in some way that ended up having the former cut down his own shinobi, and the latter never achieveing Immortal Severance. It'd also explain why Geniichiro knew where the sword was, seeing as it was a matter resolved by the Ashina top, they would have records of where they sealed the sword. 7:40 If I have my facts straight, ema only mentions Doujun as a disciple of Dougen. From the note Dousaku writes to Doujun, it sounds like Dousaku and Dougen were rivals in their research, rather than disciple and master. 22:06 It's not a translation error. The Japanese text for the fragrant flower note says (partially) "The water which flows from the source is the key to the fragrance. Where the water of the fountain...in other words, the rejuvenating water, collects, you might find that white, fragrant flower bloom." It out right says the two are one and the same. 23:01 I don't think those are centipedes, but there's also no need to confine the infested to centipedes, as we know there certain other infested manifests themselves as other bugs as shown by the vomitting monks. 24:08 What if it was the dragon who told him about it? After all, who else would know better than the divine traveler itself? If you consider how detailed the dragon's return was written, it sounds almost as if the children of the rejuvenation were meant to be potential cradles for the divine heir, right? How else would the child come to the conclusion that she can become that cradle, after reading the text? Once you let the child eat the persimmon/hearts, the old ladies that pray to her seem to know already that they will be heading for a journey (They're also the people guiding you to the snake persimmons), so it sounds like this was part of the original plan all along. The exile of one of them (on the bridge to Ashina castle) would also be evidence of the change in the Senpou monks' ways, as they would not want to follow the original plan of sending the dragon off, which would cut off their possible immortality.

The centipedes do not come from the water. Centipedes are terrestrial arthropods. Those are also very clearly not centipedes feeding on the carcass on the lakebed. Dragons are linked to water/the sea, centipedes to earth/mountains. The dragon is found at the spring, the centipedes are connected directly to Mt. Kongo. There are absolutely key bits of information that we are still missing from the broader narrative here.

he’s said that that would undoubtedly change how he makes and directs these videos, what with the need for subtitles and the like. He likes to play the voice lines over scenes, cutscenes and other things like that, so using the Japanese voices would essentially mean switching up everything.

always love the storytelling of your lore dives but wouldn't it make more sense for the person who sought the crimson mortal blade before you to be Tomoe rather than Genichiro?
@metthewzy3298
5 жыл бұрын
Yes the original Japanese dialogue does not mention the gender of this previous person. Judging from Tomoe's mentioning that the temple hid the blade from her, she might have tried to pass the monkeys but failed.
@quelatielofmirrah188

Same here. Although I am biased towards Tomoe. In my headcanon Tomoe is also the Kingfisher and the true Sculptor, and she's also an Okami.
@vitalviral8865

I think it most likely is Tomoe but there are some inconsistencies with this. Tomoe sought the mortal blade long before we did (during the time when there was the previous dragon rot epidemic), but the Divine child most likely would not be alive at that time unless she does not age which would be weird considering that kuro does age (we see him being much smaller in hirata estate when we kneel in front of him in lady butterfly's cutscene compared to what his height is in present) or another theory altogether would be that the monkeys are protecting mortal blade and not the Divine child. Another theory would be that the previous epidemic was not that long ago but it would get quite ridiculous. Edit: Plus it makes more sense for genichiro to fail since he is a samurai and would not be as good as a shinobi (Tomoe) in stealth for killing the monkeys.

@vitalviral8865

@@tyjay6752 Yeah I thought I was missing something. The way Emma referred to the previous epidemic seemed like it was long time ago but I totally forgot about the fact that she mentions seeing Tomoe. But seeing some parallels between Kuro and the divine child, could they be of the same age? If so, would that mean that Takeru and Kuro have existed at the same time and hence more than one divine heir can exist at the same time? It gets confusing by this but basically Tomoe makes more sense to be the one but there are less assumptions in it being Genichiro

I think its a cool detail that all the children who died are represented by the red and white flowers, that spin. while the one who survived has a white flower that doesnt. she is immortal, and as we know, that means shes stagnated. hence, her flower doesnt move

I honestly don't know what to think about the connection between the Rejuvenating Waters, the centipede, and the Red Lumps (as they grant the same red eyes the Waters do). By the way, I don't think the glowing maggots we see on the carp skeleton are centipedes, I would rather say they are the grown baits that Harunaga and Koremori want us to feed to the Great Carp, poisoning and eating the fish from the inside. Also, what would the connection between the Carp, the Dragon and the Waters be? There's so much I can't seem to figure out...
@BigDBrian
5 жыл бұрын
I don't think the red eyes are 'granted' by the waters. I think they indicate a failure to become a 'Master', a great carp. As the Red Carp Eyes description reads: "Carp with only eyes that are red cannot become “masters”."
@luigicrisci7637
5 жыл бұрын
@@BigDBrian The fact the red eyes mark the ones who cannot become masters may also be tied with the Red Lump description "A red mass is the lingering trace of one who was unable to achieve their desires." (Something I came up with on the spot, sorry! Ahahahah) However, the Waters undoubtedly grant red eyes, as the Ministry Dousing Powder item description says "The Ministrators feared Ashina, her eyes bloodshot with the waters of Rejuvenation." Also, Emma notices Genichiro red eyes the first time you defeat him, and correctly deduces he drank the Waters of Rejuvenation.

I still have a long way to go in Sekiro, but I couldn't resist watching a few lore videos. And I must say: I *love* how FromSoft always manages to implement this theme of corruption (usually in some way related to over-ambition, greed or selfish acts of men or Gods) into their worlds and I love the way how they depict it. There's something about the way things 'work' in Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro that I just really love - in terms of storytelling (and lack thereof), combat and world building. These games have spawned many good (and terrible) clones, but these remain the true masterpieces for me.

It should be noted that in different buddhist traditions, enlightenment is merely a kind of cathartic breakthrough, it is not the same as nirvana. I don't know if there's a Japanese phrase that's more explicit, but it's perfectly reasonable to assume that the buddhist monks were trying to understand their immortality similar to a koan rather than achieving nirvana. Koans don't have an understanding in words or even in rationale, they are meant to serve as a focus that will unlock a more ephemeral kind of understanding of the universe. A conviction of sorts. Something which the monks never found, since they seem to have been too focused on the practical implications of this koan-like situation they are in. They are immortal. They must gain understanding through introspection. However, they take this quest too literal and pursue knowledge of all immortality, even at the cost of evil, which ironically locks them out of understanding the koan. In other words, the monks become incredibly powerful in the pursuit of solving a riddle that was merely meant to be a north star, learning about all material and occult aspects of the riddle, without achieving enlightenment.
