Come on, Edward totally deserved to be Reborn, he went cross-country while being attacked by weird goop zombies, awakened a giant robot only to watch it collapse and fail, and still made it back to his town on foot, while still sick from the gas, all so he could take care of his daughter.

Arthur did claim he could control that outcome which makes it worse. Despite being some 'higher being' he seemed to hate Edward in a very human, petty way. He wanted Edward to see it was for nothing and suffer knowing this just mere steps before the proverbial finish line. Give him hope before yanking the rug out. Arthur apparently got some sick enjoyment from this. But not before hinting the other guy who betrayed was going to experience a far less pleasant end.

As bad as it sounds, there was just no way. He was part of an old world that stopped existing while the new one had no need for him anymore. It's a meme at this point, I know, but if you brought a WWII allied soldier who died on the battlefield to 2022 and showed him all the...modern woke nonsense, he wouldn't like it one bit. Maybe he'd just switch sides... Humanity has a tendency of burying tons of people under the pavement to progress, and Edward was one of those people. "Deserve" has nothing to do with anything in this sad world. Once you understand that, I recommend you go and watch tons of russian science fiction, mostly from the soviet era. Regarding Ristol and it's destruction... I don't know how right or wrong this is, but I always got the impression the giant Electrol Crystal was like a shield for the city, protecting it from both gas and the visitors alike. So when Adam gave it away, he took the shield away and that is why the city was untouched and was attacked inmediatly after Edward's departure
@AnonD38

It might have had the same effect like the visitor’s reactor (probably powered by Electrol too) that it prevented the gas from affecting people. But I don’t think it kept the visitors away. I think it’s way likelier that it was the Visitor‘s retaliation for Adam not sabotaging the Crystal like he promised. Or they planned to do this anyways. As it’s likely the Visitors wanted the Crystal to reach the Guardian, so that the Guardian would inevitably fail and convince the Blacksmith that turning was the only choice he had. Willingly or not.

In the DLC, it's strongly suggested that Guardian was sabotaged by forces allied with the Invaders. The hero finds a missile with instructions to launch it in case "Guardian strays off course". Excerpt from the wiki. This would obviously be the most viable reason why the guardian failed. Or y'know, "them" as people talked about in the west, who might have just destroyed the guardian P.S. The "it is too early to interfere" part got me thinking . . . what if the Visitors knew of the Guardian? Or that Adam and the Blacksmith were only playing along while still trying to fight back against the Visitors and the Reborn? Like, the Visitors and Reborn seem pretty focus on getting Adam and the Blacksmith to their side. So what if letting Edward through to complete his deliver, to make it so the Guardian could launch. . . was simple because the Visitors knew they would defeat the giant robot and in doing so would make Adam and the Blacksmith submit since there was no hope then? Also awesome video by the way, I've seen some of your other story summaries and while they are usually somber, you do a great job at explaining the lore and story of the game.

If the Guardian hadn’t been launched then Adam and the Blacksmith would have likely tried repurposing parts of the Guardian to attempt a last ditch adhoc defense of the City, which would have only caused more needless violence and likely would have led to the visitors‘ retaliation. The fear of losing it all is a powerful one. There really is only one way for a rational human being to overcome it: hope. Hope that, even if you die, others will carry on. Without hope there is only that ever enveloping fear. Fear is a natural biological response to danger. But since most humans (in the first world) nowadays haven’t felt true bone chilling fear for a long time (sometimes ever), experiencing this fear makes us crave this unknown feeling. Horror as a genre is as popular as it is, because real horror is (fortunately) only experienced by few people (in the first world) today.

Yes, you're supposed to be nauseated. In fact, I think the game makers WANT players to hate the Visitors and the Reborn and the ending. The bad guys won before the game really started, and your character(s) are the lucky few who at least get to understand why. TFS contrasts hope and bravery in a bleak world of inevitable doom. This ending is part of it, too.

@SquatchGamingChannel

Having a lot of information you could miss is putting it mildly. Lol. The resource management required in the train travel sections of the first game actually incentivizes you to end those sections as quickly as possible so you don't have people die and/or run out of resources, so you can easily miss crucial information about the story. It's impressive that you beat the game without the melee though! It's important to use so you can keep a handle on your ammo, but I suppose you made it work without that. Lol. Thanks for watching!

It actually wasn't too bad. Way better than Dead Cells or Darkest Dungeon where I had over 100 hours played before I could actually begin to work on the video. This game is far from what I usually play but it's genuinely one of my favorites. From the art style, the general "vibe and aesthetic" of the world and especially the music hits just right. It reminds me a lot of when back in the mid 2000s' my mother and I would go to a mall and during the train ride you could see the industrial buildings and the unkept sides of the tracks with cement barriers and rusted metal being overtaken by foliage. Those memories flooded back into my mind the moment I began playing the game, so yeah, I quite enjoyed it.

I think the most crushing part of this for me is Edward doesn't get to lay eyes on his daughter before he's denied the chance to live in a new world with her. All of this, every pain staking hour of work and bullets fired and bruises and burns and narrow survival, only to die before he can hold his daughter one last time. and for what? simply because he isn't worthy of being a reborn? Edward embodied the indomitable human spirit of love, only to be crushed under the heel of an uncaring, unempathetic, god-like species.

I've been looking for an explanation of this absolute twisted pretzel of a game for a long time. I couldn't quite wrap my head around the plot, but the concept of someone rushing through a place that's crumbling all around them on some long-shot effort for a better ending fascinates me. I'm just captivated by the way the game reveals to the player that something is wrong. You get rumors from other people, and then big things like communication and transport suddenly breaking down, but almost nobody knows anything about what's happening-- either because the attack itself is too quick for news to get out or because authority is intentionally keeping it quiet. That already really catches my interest, but then they added the theme of a hopeless cause and the hyperfocused viewpoint that only gives glimpses of what's happening in the world at large. I saw someone asking about other games like this in the comments. I don't think other games like this exist. I haven't even read a book or watched a movie that worked with the same concept. What a great game.

Nothing justifies killing and turning most everyone else into monsters while the lucky few individuals get to live, just to kickstart humanity's evolution. That was not the Visitors' call to make... Edward did not deserve to be turned into a monster either... Arthur is a traitor, and a saboteur. The Visitors? Giving humanity a key to the future - but *WHOSE* future! They denied us any other choice! For the Visitors it's either evolve the way *they* want us to, or die! That's not fair or reasonable, and far, far from benevolent intentions! It's evil, plain and simple. A perfect, yet pitiful excuse to justify genocide. That's not "medicine..." it's theological insanity. it's *murder.*

Everyone jumps to the conclusion that our character, Edward, is a bad person because he was changed by the medicine. However, I don’t think the medicine inherent just infects bad people, I believe it more just affects those who are more emotion driven, more human. Edward is one such person, he refuses to find his own safety because he wants nothing more than to return home to his child. He refuses to let go, which ultimately cost him his life. If he was such a bad person to begin with, why do the people him look at him indifferently? Why would his daughter look up to him? Ultimately, I would believe if anything, either his hand in helping humanity, or the bitterness of Arthur/The Cowboy was what caused Edward to die.
@HPSmugscraft

I didn't get that impression, either. I gather that Edward, like the player, doesn't know what's going on and didn't anticipate the Apocalypse happening when he went to work that morning. He just wants to do what he's being made to do and get home. The Visitation rains on both the good and the bad. Whether you become Reborn is largely the genetic lottery.

I'm so glad people are actually talking about this game, it went under the radar for a lot of people. As for the uncovered stuff, one way I always looked at it is maybe Peter was walking through the aftermath of a medieval battle on our Earth, since it's possible that the planet the game takes place on is an entire planet entirely.
@SquatchGamingChannel
Жыл бұрын
I've seen people speculate that the medieval battle means the Visitors/Arthur can travel through time, but that just doesn't feel right to me. At no point in the entire game is time travel mentioned, and why would they introduce a new concept to the story right at the end of the DLC which finished the series (unless they were planning more content but scrapped it)? I personally think it's more likely that it suggests Arthur may have become Reborn a lot earlier than we originally thought, and through that power, which we know extends the lifespan of people, he was able to stay alive through centuries and do his work to elevate Humanity in that time. I like your idea though! Sounds pretty good! Much simpler than mine. Lol Thanks for watching!

Agree 100% Atmosphere, world-building, and lore: phenomenal The telling of the story itself: needed work The DLC fixed the issue of listening to character conversations during the travel section by taking out the resource management, but by making it so you could only take one passenger at a time, made it so you had to play the game a dozen times to see all the conversations! This is really interesting story, however its so unclear why one people turn in monster and other is not. Some hints suggest that its "bad blood" factor, considering that violent crimes is normally lead to being monster, however, it seems they subjected "normal" people to gas and many become monsters too. Heck, its looks like most of population become monsters and they cannot be all "bad blood". Also, medicine which fails at most of population is FAILURE. no matter how much is benefits for minority. I rather feel that people with tendention to struggle against (not being "obedient" ) is one who is eradicated. Visitors not only "progress" humans, they make servants willing to comply to orders. Well, or its another biological factor vaguely affecting humans aside of who will turn in monsters. For example its possible so much of prisoners turned to monster just because such test subjects is much more available for testing then "well respected citizens".
