These jade pendants were given to our HUI (Gather | Share | Learn) conference guests, made by Aaron Greaves of New Zealand.
Pounamu (jade) plays a very important role in Māori culture, considered a taonga (treasure). Pounamu taonga increase in mana (prestige) as they pass from one generation to another. The most prized taonga are those with known histories going back many generations. These are believed to have their own mana and were often given as gifts to seal important agreements.
Hei- to suspend, necklace
Toki- leadership, in the form of an adze or working tool.
The act of giving a symbolic piece such as this is called "tato pounamu" and is the sign of a relationship being formed. We hope our HUI attendees cherish these pendants and pass along their own stories!
