THE STORY OF ULI STIELIKE "EL PANZER"
Ullrich Stielike, better known as Uli Stielike, was born in the city of Ketsch, West Germany, on November 15, 1954. He began his football journey with SpVgg Ketsch before making a move to Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he won the Bundesliga in the 1974-75, 1975-76, and 1976-77 seasons. Additionally, he secured the UEFA Cup in 1974-75 and the German Cup in his first year with the team, 1972-73.
He earned call-ups to the German youth national teams and made his debut for the senior German team in 1975. Stielike played 42 matches for his national team, winning the European Championship in the 1980 Euro held in Italy. During this period, he played alongside another German who would later join Real Madrid, Bernd Schuster. He also finished as the runner-up in the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain, scoring three goals with Die Mannschaft.
In 1977, at the age of 23, he joined Real Madrid following negotiations that began with a visit from President Bernabéu to Germany. His first season in Spain, 1977-78, coincided with Santiago Bernabéu's last season in charge. He joined Juan Gómez 'Juanito' and Argentine Enrique Wolff. Local players Isidro, Sabido, and Escribano also moved up to the first team.
Since his arrival, Uli Stielike became an indispensable part of the team. Reports described him as a complete midfielder with great physicality, power, and quality. In his debut season as a Merengue, he excelled in the attacking midfield, scoring thirteen goals in the league and becoming the second-highest scorer behind Santillana. He also netted two goals in the Cup, playing a total of 31 official matches and scoring fifteen goals in his first year in Spain.
Stielike was nicknamed 'Panzer,' reflecting his playing style. The magazine Don Pelota named him the best foreign player in the league for four consecutive seasons, from 1977-78 to 1980-81. His initial three seasons in Spain resulted in three league titles and one cup, the latter won against Castilla in the famous final on June 4, 1980.
