Tree-shaped data such as phylogenetic trees are just one example of data with non-Euclidean structure. Metrics on trees rarely define a space with linear or even continuous shape, which limits the use of standard statistics. But by understanding the geometry of more complex metric spaces, we can develop new statistical techniques for tree data.
This talk we will focus on two approaches to tree statistics with non-Euclidean geometry, one using cube complexes and the other using tropical geometry. We will discuss how our understanding of the geometric and combinatorial structure of these spaces has led to the development of more natural statistical methods for trees.
Familiarity with graphs and geometry will be very helpful.
