Ngl, simplifying research jobs verbally can be fun. I have a buddy that works with river ecosystem management and I just call him a fish fondler

To be fair, I think a lot of jobs are hard to explain to someone who isn't in that field

I beg to disagree with the notion of "I/he/she sucks at explaining things, so I just do R&D". No, you need the ability and skill set to boil down your research findings to people without context. Because otherwise you can only communicate to the your teammates. Obviously communicating to laymen outside of your field is difficult, but you can't prove the value of your work unless YOU are able to explain it

Then, we have the flip side of the issue, where you are actually interested to learn what the other person does, but they can't be bothered to explain their job, so they go "I do medical research." It's like, yeah, I don't understand the terms and details of your field, but I do understand the research and publication process, so like, no need to completely shut down the convo lol.

I always get a kick when I'm watching a streamer and they ask, "What the hell is that"? They literally have a browser open so they can see chat, use the browser go to Google, type words, get possible answers.
