It truly was a long hot Summer in ‘83 and such a memorable time of my life. Falling deeply in love with my first ever girlfriend (Clare) and I still hold those happy memories in my heart till this day. My first job, earning money and the whole world was your oyster. The ones that you love were still alive and healthy. 40 years later since the release of this song and it still affects me today the same way that it did then. It takes a genius to compose such a powerful and beautiful song that transports you straight to a happier point in place and time.

The Style Council are one of THE most important bands to ever emerge and it's pathetic how fans of The Jam claim that The Style Council are rubbish. They were are are utter CLASS x I still remember when this piece of funk summer synth soul was released in 1983 and I adored it and always will xx
@GregOrCreg

Totally agreed. I think the backlash was symptomatic of the snobbish attitude the predominantly white musical press had towards soul and pop music at the time (i.e. basically anything that wasn't a rock song played by a bunch of white guys on guitar). But like you say, this song and the band are class.

That's because The Jam had a fan base of teenage boys. Of course they weren't happy Paul decided The Jam were in a artistic dead end and split the band. Here are your beautiful lyrics: I play out my role Why I've even been out walking They tell me that it helps But I know when I'm beaten All those lonely films And all those lonely parties But now the feeling is off-screen An' the tears for real not acted, anymore I'm all mixed up inside I want to run but I can't hide And however much we try We can't escape the truth and the fact is Don't matter what I do It don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do 'Cause I end up hurting you One more covered sigh And one more glance you know means goodbye Can't you see that's why We're dashing ourselves against the rocks of a lifetime Don't matter what I do It don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do 'Cause I end up hurting you (In my mind different voices call) What once was pleasure now's pain for us all (In my heart only shadows fall) I once stood proud now I feel so small (I don't know whether to laugh or cry) The long hot summer just passed me by Don't matter what I do It don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do 'Cause I end up hurting you

There were so many perfectly apt hits during that genuinely long hot summer of 1983 of which this was one of the finest by far - possibly the Style Council's greatest moment I think. Even though their output has been very much hit and miss - some genius songs and some dire ones. Other brilliant pop hits of that unforgettable 1983 summer which really bring back waves of longing nostalgia for those of us who were teenagers during that year came from acts as diverse as New Order (Blue Monday), The Lotus Eaters (The First Picture Of You), Freeez (IOU), JoBoxers (Just Got Lucky), Roman Holliday (Don't Try To Stop It), Tracie (GIve It Some Emotion), Bananarama (Cruel Summer), Gary Byrd & The GB Experience (The Crown), KC & The Sunshine Band (Give It Up), Wham! (Bad Boys and Club Tropicana), Yazoo (Nobody's Diary), Blancmange (Blind Vision), Altered Images (Bring Me Closer and Love To Stay), Paul Young (Wherever I Lay My Hat), Spandau Ballet (Gold), Depeche Mode (Everything Counts), The The (Perfect) ...... it was a wonderful pop soundtrack back when we were younger!! For those who were kids into the pop charts of the day, this was also a time also soundtracked by listening to Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 1 and the infamous Radio 1 Roadshows - such happy times. Things started to change once some of us became students as we then started to discover different genres of music other than just the commercial UK chart stuff - thanks to people like John Peel and Janice Long and Andy Kershaw.

Love this tune & video. I was only 3 in 1983 & have to admit that it wasn’t until 2003 when I watched the video & in doing so discovered The Style Council thanks I seem to remember to an ‘I love 1983’ programme. Paul Weller for me up to this point was all about the solo stuff in the 90s (I knew a little about The Jam). Pivotal moment in my musical education.

I was really lucky, I was born in 1990 and my mum was a massive Paul Weller fan, so she'd play the Jam, Style Council and his solo stuff. Great to read your new love!

I saw this video on MTV in 1996 . I had a crush on Paul Weller when I saw him in this video in 1996. I was a teenager back then. Born in 1980.

I was a bit too young for bands like Wham! & The Style Council in the 80s when they came out, but wow, they sure are great. Best era for music is definitely 60s-90s. Class tune this is 👌

Remember one sunny Friday afternoon in 1983 we walk down to the banks of the River Cam for a few beers and came across Paul and the crew filming this video......

Hi W5PWR ...Do you remember what was going on around him on the river? How were other young people behaving? It's a wonderful sultry video. I wonder if other people were behaving like Paul and having fun in a similar uninhibited way?

@@rogerclark3229 hi Roger. I was there. I remember the youth behaving in a similar uninhibited way! The birds chirped for freedom, cider ran down our hairless chests. What a time, what a place

@@kernmckelvey Hi Kern... Wow! Thanks for getting back. They certainly were great times! The reason I'm asking is I'm hoping to publish a book of photos I took in Cambridge in 1983 - including pictures enjoying themselves punting on the Cam. Were you a student at the time?

I have been looking for this song for years. I was watching Chance B's Soul Story and saw the guy's face and said that's them. This video was in rotation on MTV in 1984. I never knew who made it, nor the title. I just remembered the bass line, and "no matter what I do". When I searched that a zillion things came up, but not the video.
