While I knew my third great grandfather's brother died on the Sultana, I didn't know much about this disaster nor did I have any idea of the number of dead. Ironically, my great grandfather's brother on the other side of my family, died on the Titanic. All 4 of my mother's great grandparents came here on the Carpathia which later rescued the Titanic passengers who had survived. But back to the Sultana, I have an old engraving of the disaster that my grandmother left me years ago. I have it framed on the wall next to the photos of my third great grandfather and his brother in their union soldier's uniforms. My ancestor in his captain's uniform and his little brother in his Zouave uniform. His little brother had been a fire fighter in New Bedford. Their entire company joined as a Zouave unit. My third great grandfather almost was their commanding officer but was put in charge of another unit from Boston, otherwise he very likely would have died aboard the Sultana and I would not be here to type this.

I'm surprised Hollywood never did anything about the Sultana disaster. It amazes me reading some of these comments how many folks don't even know their own countries history. Another little tidbit: Since the Mississippi River changed its course many times over the years much of the wrecked steamer lies buried in a field over a mile from the disaster site. Thanks for another great video.

Deana Rupe ; South breaks from the United States as it has the Constitutional right to do. Yankees invade the southern states, committing arson, theft, rape, torture, & murder. Many of the invaders are captured & held in prison camps. The war ends . The freed criminals are overloaded onto a steamboat to take them back north. Steamboat explodes, many of the criminals die horribly. Disney doesn't have to give the Sultana story a happy ending...it already has one.

Having against all odds somehow survived the civil war prisoner camps and on the way to finally leaving this most horrific chapter of their lives one can visualize the cheering waving soldiers with nothing but gleefulness in their eyes with the anticipation of finally returning home too their loved ones only to have their lives cut short in this way and their deaths hardly been noticed in their own time is just heart wrenching! I collect Civil war Memorabilia have a collection of Civil war letters which I prized reading them brings their world back to life hopes and dreams long gone yet so vivid and relatable what these men endure and the limits of human experience is something we are all curious about because it can tell us a lot about ourselves keeping their memory alive is a promise we must keep we need more people like Jerry!! My great, great, great granpa Robert Winter died during this accident, was in a confederate camp half starved to death. His best friend came and told the family, they fought together, and he was with him when he boarded the sultana. Ironically, my great, great, great grandpa on my grandpas side of the family was a confederate soldier who was guarding a bridge in strawberry plains Tennessee. He was posthumously given the congressional medal of honor in 1994. Google James Keelan, his story is pretty crazy. His medal is in a museum in east Tennessee. God bless.

Jerry, The Titanic was not an American Ship. The Titanic was made in Ireland, but operated by a British shipping company. The Sultana sinking was not a maritime disaster since it happened on a river and not on the sea. Mar in Latin means sea. It was however USA s greatest non wartime nautical disaster. Nautical comes Greek meaning that which pertains to ships or sailing.

Do you know that the Civil War was NOT about slavery? Four years prior, the SS Central America sank and caused a banking panic and by the time of the Civil War, the banking system had still not recovered. That played a role, but the big reason was and the part of history that they have kept from us...until now, was that Linoln was actually AN ILLEGITIMATE PRESIDENT and the South wanted to seceed because they did not want to be a part of an illegitimate country. Lincoln was NOT this nice guy like he has been portrayed. I think Mary's family actually had slaves. I find it ironic because America is going through the same thing right now.

I had a Tennessee Union ancestor from Knoxville in TN who was prisoner of Confederates till freed and was to on the Sultana but was lost in this disaster-presumed drowned. He was assumed drowned. My Genealogist Great Grandmother, Daughters of the Confederacy Knoxville Chapter President in early 20th century, disregarded, even denied, lineage to him due to him being a “Damn Yankee.” East Tennessee was extremely divided, even more so than the Civil War in most parts itself. There’s a great book about this called “Divided Loyalties.” I wonder if there’s a Passenger Manifest of the ship in some archive. Even so, I’m sure it is missing numerous troops lost in the explosion.

The boilers were overloaded; relief valves were weighted down for more power against the strong current and heavy cargo. When forced to zizag the river to mitigate the strong current, the boiler's cooling water level became uneven from the ship listing from the side swell. This resulted in at least one boiler's steel to become far too hot, and lose strength. Eventually- 7 miles from Memphis, at 2 a.m.- that boiler blew, taking out two other boilers with the resulting shrapnel. This tragedy, like so many others- becomes a study in cause & effect. Those poor war ravaged souls met their end by the Sultana's owner's greed and indifference, a deliverance by the devil as they bore homeward.

About 38 years ago my dad and second cousin found where the remnants of this ship rested at. They found where the river changed course over time. The story said the ship was eventually tied off to a huge oak on the property of a confederate generals property that lived on the river.it burned and finish sinking right there.. I was around 10 years of age but recall seeing the rigging still left in the tree on this generals property. They measured out the dimensions with a metal detector of what they believed was left of the metal scraps of the sunken ship under the earth. They were pretty sure that was it. The property was located somewhere around mound city on the Arkansas side of the river. They talked to some old timers that claimed it sunk in that area also. I’m not sure if it was ever dug up or not.. My Dad could probably still locate the area.. I had some great times adventuring with them as a kid. This story makes me think of that.. Thank you Jerry!!!! I love your videos!

Very informative and interesting as always, Mr. Skinner. You have taken these old stories and brought them back to life in a fascinating way. Thank you so much for sharing so much history with us! I do humbly submit a request for you to do a video one day on the life of Strom Thurmond, the South Carolina political figure that had a truly interesting life. Have you ever considered doing a story on him? I think many people from the South would love to learn about the many facets and complexities of his long life, and like Huey Long or E.H. Crump ( whose stories I enjoyed immensely), Thurmond was a very powerful figure for many decades . Whatever subject you choose for your next video, I look forward to watching it as I have all of your videos. Thank you again for bringing Southern history back to life for us!

Thanks for telling the story of the Sultana, Jerry. Not to say that Lincoln's assassination wasn't tragic - it most certainly was. My word, that is so tragic. And such a horrific story to be treated like it was and placed on the back page of a newspaper as if their lives were insignificant. Had the President not been killed, he no doubt would have addressed this with such compassion. I know this is not the same thing but I remember when Farrah Fawcett died and around the same time Michael Jackson died and her death was overshadowed and became an after thought simply because of all the publicity surrounding MJ. RIP Sultana, FF and MJ!
