The scene where John Walker runs down that huge sandhill is terrific.

I saw an interview with Coe recently from the winter of 83, where he was asked about how fast the Mile WR could go. He said that he believed it would be down to "3:44 within the next 2 to 3 years". I presume that must have been what he felt he could have achieved.

Ovett looked like he had plenty in the tank when he equalled the 1500m WR in Oslo later in 1980 and in the Dream Mile in 1981, when he looked as if he was out for a stroll when finishing in 3:49.25! I am sure that he could have ran 3:47 on that night.

He was the greatest middle distance runner of that era for me as well. I'd rate Cram the best miler out of the big three Brits though .

Coe, Cram and Ovett pretty much represented the perfecting of mile running, at least if we assume the obvious that the Africans who came after were EPOing their way to sub 3:45 times. Crazy to think that all three were probably capable of running 3:44 with better pacing, competition, better luck with injuries & ill health. With stricter drug testing we'll probably only see micro improvements in the WR due to incremental improvements in tracks, shoes etc, rather than training.

I don't think all athletes from Africa can be discredited owing to drug suspicion. If anything we should be asking why certain American coaches suspected of doping athletes in the past are still allowed to coach some of their top stars.

I agree with you the Africans are dirty drug takers and I believe the last clean WR for 1500m and the mile was Cram

In reply to Deano's "I presume that must have been what he felt he could have achieved": I think he would have been generalising, especially since in 1983 the premiere milers were Cram and Ovett.
@deano27671

Yes, I'm sure he was generalising, but Cram didn't look capable of 3:44 in his 83 form, although he did in 85. I'm sure if he believed others could run 3:44 and he didn't think he could match it, then he would have given up running. And in 84 Coe was back as the premier miler.

Walker says he should have run 3.47.5 and blamed 3 years of injury following the 76 gold. I suppose Coe and Ovett could say the same. But Walker never had, at the end of his career - the sheer quantity of fast runs that Coe and Ovett did (3.32 1500s and 3.48/9 miles). Looking at Coe's 3.48.95 - he seems to jog the last 30 meters!

Many people had Saïd Aouita had the number one miler in 1984.

+Red Rum When he decided to do the 5,000m instead of the 1500m at the Olympics he gave up the right to being considered for that. Cram beat Aouita in 83 and 85 and Coe beat Cram in 84 so how does that puts Said ahead.
@redrum4100

+Red Rum Track and Field News have Aouita ahead of Coe in the rankings for 1984, probably because Aouita ran some very quick times over the mile and 1500m that year and was never beaten, and although Coe won the Olympics, he finished second in the AAAs. It's interesting that Track and Field have Ovett way down in the rankings, but going into the Olympics he was actually the bookies favourite.

I know about the t&f rankings and don't agree with them. Running a couple of fast times can't equate to winning the Olympics esp as the top runners are aiming to peak then not during lesser meetings. Its mot like he even beat their world records that year. Coe ran less than a second slower than Aouita's best for 84 after the 800m races, 1500m heats and with no pace maker in the Olympics final!

+Red Rum I agree that Coe should have been ranked first (my "many people have said" didn't include me). The Track and Field rankings occasionally leave a lot to be desired, and not having Ovett in the top ten in 1984 was a joke. If they were going to rank Aouita first because of his performances away from the Olympics, then Ovett's five straight 1500/mile wins leading up to the Olympics (which were so polished that he became the pre-Olympic 1500m favourite) surely deserved to have been given the same consideration.

+Red Rum It's interesting that Ovett was the bookies favorite, I wasn't aware of that. I remember reading that Ovett has claimed he was in the best shape of his career coming into the 84 Games. I can only find one of his 84 pre-Olympics races on KZitem, the 1500m at the Bislett Games in which he just does enough to hold off Gonzalez, Flynn and Crabb.
