The Lexus SC was groundbreaking in a way that's almost impossible to recognize now - it carved out it's own niche of grand tourer/personal luxury coupe at the price point it was offered, and the styling - which looks pretty commonplace now - was downright radical when the car came out in 1992 - so much so that Toyota had to design new processes to make the body panels and other parts on the car. It spawned so many imitators it's now hard to recognize it as the original.
Toyota was riding high on the success of the LS sedan, launched 2 years earlier, and wanted to add a luxury coupe to the Lexus lineup. Rather than cutting doors off the sedan as was common practice at the time, they gave their designers a blank sheet of paper to work with - a large part of what makes this car rare and special today. It got the power from the LS, but most everything underneath was new, and would go on tao make the underpinnings of the now highly collectible Mark 4 Supra.
It's nice to see these cars finally coming in to their own, and picking up steam in the collector market - they languished for a long time, and were an absolute bargain in the car world - that is quickly changing, and rightfully so.
