Vernon Slone Hi Vernon. Hope it brought you back to those great days. You’re right. We did think they would never end. Glad we had the Drag News articles to guide us alone the way. And Tom’s great stories added up to an unbeatable combination. We are all lucky to have it to refer to again and again.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this series. Thank you Mr. Pitts. I know you want a break, but I don't want it to end. I'd still love to hear more about the post Surfer era as the team pursued individual projects and ultimately the loss of Mike. I'd never tire of listening to Mr Jobe; these were incredibly fascinating guys in my book.

Pitts, I am getting to the point where I feel like Olsen it speaking for me in my appreciation of this series you guys have done. The differing inputs from everyone has been great, so I now look forward to your next project ... still thinking Kuhl and Olsen might be a good subject since they are both around yet, and Olsen still looks like he is about 14. I want to hear about their racing backgrounds and their coming together for that special time, along with Carl's deal with the devil to look like he does at his advanced age. Including Walt was great, since he was in the other car for those significant events in the Surfers' history. Well done and really would love to hear even more of it.

The background nitro runs are perfect, and those Donovan valve covers make the engine look more mean. That was a 64-car field, including the formidable Beebe Bros.

Bill, will there be a close out episode or two? What did Skinner and Jobe go on to do? Like the others I could listen to these guys forever, but at least let us know what they went on to. Please.... I'm begging.

Thanks again for all the effort making those videos and sharing them with us. Between now and next Thursday, some members of the class might be interested in seeing what Mr. Jobe did after the dragster was gone. There’s a (super short) clip of him in James Garner’s The Racing Scene (1969), helping out with Garner’s car after it breaks a distributor at Lime Rock. Here’s the link: kzitem.info/news/bejne/p2iNrmt6rJ-Wiqg Tom appears just for a few seconds, at 24:03 on the left side of screen, then again at 24:17 where he leans in from right and reaches for distributor.

Is Jobe talking about the "big meet" at Lions as the '67 PDA that Prudhomme in the Baney car won after being reinstated in the semi's on the break rule after being sent to the trailer by Beebe-Vinston-Sixt or Zookeeper?

Why did they decide to sell, did I miss that?
@vintagedragsters
6 жыл бұрын
Maulzy23 Hi Maulzy. They proved their point and did it on a shoe string budget. The next step would have been taking on sponsors to get the money to continue and Skinner and Jobe didn’t want to go that route. They moved on to Can Am racing and did well there for a while. But we stuck to just their time in drag racing. And that was plenty for our little no profit production. Tell others about this series if you think it will increase their knowledge of the history of drag racing. And thanks again for watching. Bill

Had S & J built a new dragster for '67, coagulated-metalflake red and serious chrome pieces, that was sold to Richie Bandell? On the cover of HR? The boys would have certainly caught up in '67, engine and tire wise. (Jobe's earlier comment about wrinkle-wall tires coming out in '67.) You certainly deserve a break, Bill, but some future installments with Walt Stevens recalling some Piranha/Freight Train/Poacher stories would be interesting.
@AAFC733

Walt Stevens, an experienced driver (Freight Train? The Joe Anahory-wrenched Pirhana) thought Jobe was running 'zine---that's some HP. They must have sounded like a monster at the PDA meet, open qualifying for 64 cars. Interesting to know the post-Surfers car did trials with Stevens prior to the '67 PDA ----where I understand the Beebe Bros. easily did away with Shelby/Snake in the semis, but Prudhomme was reinstated on the break rule and won the final. Other motor enthusiasts of the late 60s who were wise beyond their years besides the immortal Skinner and Jobe----Tim Beebe and Austin Coil.
