This video is a look around the remains of Castle Haw in Sedbergh, Cumbria
This Castle has a hidden Cold War bunker. Now filled in but once a part of an early warning system to monitor the effects of nuclear bombs in the event that Russia had launched a deadly attack against the West during the Cold War
What we are looking at are the earthwork remains of a motte and bailey castle built by the Norman conquerors in the late 11th century AD to control the recently conquered Anglo-Saxon population
The Motte occupies a commanding position with excellent views to Rawthey, Garsdale and the across the town to the Lune valley.
Motte and bailey castles and the surrounding land were mostly held by Norman Barons, who would impose taxes and Norman rule, on behalf of the King, William the conqueror.
the natural mound has been utilized as was the case for most of these types of earthwork castles, with the steep natural southern bank covered in trees.
Built up, using blocks of stone and soil, to form a flat-topped cone-shaped mound, the Motte, which would once have had a wooden tower on top.
The artists impression on site shows the layout of a motte and bailey castle, with the auxiliary buildings on the flat bailey
Little seems to be known of the history of this castle or it's inhabitants.
There is an extra mound visible in the bailey, with a grid over a shaft
Not a dungeon or an oubliette, but here for much more deadly reasons than the Normans could ever have imagined,
in the twentieth century Castle haw found a military use again, first in 1943 with the Royal Observer Corps it was equipped as a 'Granite' post, the code name for posts built on Higher ground and supplied with flares to warn allied aircraft of nearby hills,
This is what remains of the Royal Observer Corps monitoring post, built in 1965 during the Cold War. Should there be a nuclear attack Observers would quickly go down the 15ft ladder into the 2 small rooms in the bunker below, one a small chemical toilet cupboard and the bigger 15ft x 7ft room where the observers would operate the monitoring equipment to measure any bomb bursts and fallout radiation levels, to work out their distance from ground zero, relaying the information to a master post in the area. They would also rest in this main room. The bunker was closed in 1968 and has been infilled with rubble.
A silent reminder of dark times.
