Hey DD, if you haven't read Zelazny's Roadmarks it's definitely worth the hunt, especially if you liked Dilvish the Damned. Zelazny has become one of my favorite classic fantasy authors over the past 6 or 7 years. He is someone I regretfully passed over in my younger years.

He's really hit or miss for me. Dilvish is actually the first thing I've read from him that I actually love. Most of his stuff I've read has only been OK for me, or I just straight up dislike it! With Dilvish, he really connected with me! I have not checked out Roadmarks, so I'll look into it! Thank you.

Changing Lads is indeed a conclusion of the story and takes place shortly after the Novella at the end of the short stories. Als, this series reminded me of Dying Earth (Jack Vance) stories quite a bit.

Some of my favorite tales, from one of my favorite authors! The description on the dust cover for the Hard Cover are better than what you read on the soft cover. I Love "The changing Land" (actually read that first, then found D the D) and will be interested as to what you think about it. Both are great reads!

I first encountered Zelazny in the early 1970s when I read "The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth," which blew me away at the time. Then I didn't read anything by him until the '80s, JACK OF SHADOWS--which I found disappointing. More recently I read Dilvish for the first time, ""Tower of Ice"" in FLASHING SWORDS # 5. It was pretty good, but seemed longer than the story really wanted to be--as if it had been padded to fit a particular-sized place in the anthology. Still, it was good enough that I'll probably seek out the collection you review here.

I think Tower of Ice works better in context to the rest of the book.

Anything by Zelazny is worth reading. His "Nine Princes in Amber" is particularly good and consists of two series of 5(?) relatively short books each.

@@TheDungeonDive you should give Lord of Light another go. Subjectively alot of folks consider it his masterpiece. It can be a bit confusing on the first read, because RZ started in the middle of the tale and then proceeded to work toward the beginning and the end simultaneously. Give it another try, hopefully you will not be disappointed!

With the number of books I've amassed still needing a 1st read, I think a re-read of LoL will be many, many years down the road. I didn't find it confusing, I just found it dull and didn't care for it. I do know, however, that it is considered by many to be one of his best! I guess I'm just not one of those. ;)

The Dilvish books are excellent,; brief, accessible and full of esoteric wit. RZ began another series of books the were quite unique in that they featured a conflict of magic and tech. I refer to the Changeling/Madwand saga. There is an astounding cliffhanger ending to the second book that screams, wait til you read the finale. Anyone on this wavelength? Any leads or insights from other Zelazny fans would be gratefully received.

@@TheDungeonDive Good luck! I don't think shopping online will help you much--copies are pricey that way. I lucked into my copy in a thrift store or somewhere it was really cheap. That's why I still like actual used bookstores: you can really find treasures that way--stuff you weren't even looking for at the time.
