The Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) | My Eight Year IBS Journey | Gut Instincts
It took me years to get diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and even longer to start living comfortably. IBS is a common digestive disorder that affects the colon. It can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
1. Changes in bowel movements: Constipation, diarrhea, or alternating between the two.
2. Abdominal pain and cramping: This is often relieved after a bowel movement.
3. Bloating: Feeling full or swollen in the abdomen.
4. Excess gas: Passing gas more often than usual.
5. Mucus in the stool: This may appear as white or clear strings or clumps.
6. Incomplete evacuation: The feeling of being unable to pass all the stool during a bowel movement.
7. Other symptoms: Heartburn, nausea, fatigue, and anxiety.
IBS is not a life-threatening condition, but it can be incredibly uncomfortable and disruptive. If you think you may have IBS, talk to your doctor. They can help you rule out other conditions and develop a treatment plan to manage your symptoms.
There is no single test that can definitively diagnose IBS. However, your doctor may order some tests to rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and infections.
Some of the tests that may be ordered for IBS include:
1. Blood tests: These tests can check for anemia, inflammation, and other abnormalities.
2. Stool tests: These tests can check for infections, parasites, and blood.
3. Imaging tests: These tests, such as an X-ray, ultrasound, or CT scan, can look for structural abnormalities in the digestive tract.
4. Endoscopy: This procedure involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end into the digestive tract. It can be used to look for inflammation, ulcers, and other problems.
5. Colonoscopy: I will discuss this in another video to explain my pre-colon cancer polyps.
I found a holistic doctor that ruled out SIBO and did a food sensitivity test. I have heard a lot of negative things about food sensitivity testing, but mine helped me tremendously. My holistic doctor tested for other issues which I will discuss in another video. #ibs #bloating #digestion #stomach
